I've just received a BBC News notification on my phone, Mark, and the wording is identical to yours! I'd sue them for plagiarism if I were you.

To the New York Post : Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose — in the bathroom with a hypodermic needle still in his arm — inside a Greenwich Village home on Sunday morning, cops said.
A personal assistant found Hoffman’s body in an apartment at 35 Bethune St. and called 911 around 11:30 a.m, sources said.
Cops are at the scene and are investigating, sources said.
In 2006, Hoffman publicly admitted that he nearly succumbed to substance abuse graduating from NYU’s drama school, but got sober in rehab.
“It was all that (drugs and alcohol), yeah. It was anything I could get my hands on…I liked it all,” he told “60 Minutes” as the time.
Last year, Hoffman reportedly checked himself into rehab again for ten days after relapsing in 2012.
TMZ said he began using prescription pills, then snorted heroin for about a week before realizing he needed help

I think I remember seeing him in Twister, but fame and money for some never brings happiness. It's sad the loved ones have to be left behind to clean up the mess over drug related issues.

Hardly a household name I would respectfully suggest

Does it really justify coverage outside the USA Rolling Eyes

Wow. I can't say this is much of a shock - a high-profile ubiquitous award-winning actor dying of a drugs overdose is surprising but I only came in this thread to read all the inevitable "well I'd never heard of him" posts! You guys never let me down Wink

I have just seen this tragically sad news on Facebook and I was tremendously shocked.

He was a very talented actor.

I enjoyed his performances in Punch Drunk Love,Doubt and Capote, for which he was awarded an Oscar, amongst others

Sad to read he leaves three small children as well as a partner.

Just 46 Sad

Hmm. Perhaps - but he has been in loads, including high profile stuff like Hunger Games, Mission Impossible 3, The Boat That Rocked (where he played an Emperor Rosko type character), Cold Mountain, Capote, Boogie Nights, Twister, Scent of a Woman....

He was a very distinctive actor.

Actually I do remember him in The Boat That Rocked. Appalling script but some good performances, including his.

Me neither and I don't recognise him form any photos but I'm not really into films.

Sad for anybody to die in such circumstances though and a shame he was not able to beat his addiction.

He was a fantastic actor - in my humble, the best of his generation, to say the least. I'd even forgive him for being in The Boat That Rocked - a film to be avoided at all costs, if ever there was one.

Instead, try When The Devil Knows You're Dead, The Savages, and any other film he made, when they crop up on Film Four . He never gave a performance (maybe not the right word, because he was a chameleon, who actually became the role he played) that was anything but excellent.

I love well-crafted films, but I pay very little interest to the names of those in front of the camera with the result that I'm pretty useless and putting names to faces. My son's partner is obsessed with Hollywood "celebs" and if I see a really good film she'll ask me who starred in it. Invariably I'll say I don't have a clue but note that the cinematography was really good, etc.

I did watch one of my favourite films again recently - The Shawshank Redemption - and I do know that Morgan Freeman was its star, but I couldn't name any other member of the cast. I don't really care, to be honest!

And so it is for Philip Seymour Hoffman; I recognised his face from his appearances but I had no idea what he was called. One thing I did note is that he looked many years older than his 46 years!
