Over the weekend,on the radio, I heard the truly hateful Edwina Currie saying, re food banks, that " there is an army of people turning up with sob stories" to use them.

I understood that you have to have vouchers to show you are having a hard time, say with benefits being delayed, to be eligible and can't just walk in willy-nilly to get food from them.

And I have found this from the Trussell Trust website

Trussell Trust foodbanks:

The Trussell Trust is a charity that runs one of the largest network of foobanks in the UK. You will usually have to have a food voucher to take with you to their foodbank in order to get food. People like GPs and social workers, and charities such as your local citizens advice bureau, may be able to issue you with a food voucher. The Trussell Trust foodbank can then give you up to three days' emergency food at one of their foodbanks.

Other local foodbanks

If you can't find a Trussell Trust foodbank near you, there may be other foodbanks in you area. There may be one at a local church or at another community centre. Each will operate their own system. You may not always need food vouchers.

To hear Edwina talk you would think (some) people are going to a food bank week after week for free food just for the heck of it and some people listening to her will think that's true.

Evil or Very Mad

My guess is that she probably can't bear the thought that it is her party that has made such things as food banks necessary in 21st century Britain, despite what Osborne & his filthy rich cronies might want us to believe. I don't remember hearing of them before May 2010. They haven't been dubbed 'The Nasty Party' for nothing. I think that people should remember things like this before casting their votes at the next general election and take all the hot air currently emanating from Osborne & co with a mine full of salt, after all it's the cost of living that's in everyone's home rather than 'the economy'.

Yes, that was my reaction when hearing that quote, too. What a spiteful and condescending woman she continues to be.

I understand that Maggie Thatcher held much the same opinion of her which explains why she never rose beyond the ranks of a junior Minister Smile

She curried favour with John Major, of course.

In the interests of justice and fair play you probably should both be arrested for peddling bad jokes Laughing
