[quote]Three members of the band Take That may have to pay back millions of pounds in tax after a tribunal ruling.

Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen - along with manager Jonathan Wild - were among about 1,000 people who put money into schemes purportedly supporting the music industry.

A little ironic methinks considering how many awards Mr Barlow has received for his 'outstanding contribution to music' Rolling Eyes

Still perhaps any future knighthood might have now been consigned to the dustbin Smile

Mark, you really ought to check the performance of the forum's BBCode tags after you've hit "Submit" - or perhaps avail yourself of the "Preview" button? Your post above is a mess!

As for Barlow & co., to be fair to them they've been badly advised by so-called "professional advisors" in recent years. That's why them pay them huge amounts of money - to receive the best advice within the context of what's permissible.

My accountant of 15 years is one of the old school (he's at least 70 years old) and he does everything by the book. He tells what I can within the framework of tax law but he also tells me what I can't do - and he tells me that such advice is also what I pay him for. I trust him to advise me properly - that's why I pay him over a grand a year.

For many years I used to shell out a great deal more than £1000 to a firm of Chartered Accountants for telling me mainly what I already knew

Then I discovered a young lady who is young and keen - accountancy wise I mean Smile - and who does a great job, doesn't treat me like a complete idiot and charges me less than half what I used to pay my former accountants over three years ago

I do agree though that there is something to be said for using an accountancy firm who are well established with a good reputation quite simply because Revenue & Customs tend to take a quick look and see the name on the set of accounts and then think - they're OK -we don't need to waste time checking anything here Smile
