According to my latest credit card statement I have paid £79.00 to join Amazon Prime. I didn't authorise this payment! I have emailed Amazon and asked for the money to be refunded.

Has anyone else come across this?

did you take up their 30 day free trial offer? If so you need to cancel out of it or they automatically continue it as though you signed up for the full package

No I didn't take up the 30-day free trial offer but they seem to think I did. I'm hopeful of a good outcome.

I've found that you have to be really careful when checking out on Amazon because their push of Prime is very hard. The offer of free next-day delivery is conditional upon a Prime 30-day free sign-up, for instance.

I received an email from Amazon yesterday offering me a free 30 day trial of Prime, this has got me worried now. I think I will check my card statement, just to be on the safe side.

Colin, I bought a DVD near the end of October which is probably when they would have offered me the 30-day free trial and it was a month later when I was charged the £79.00. I didn't ask for a next-day delivery.

Angela, I hope you have not been caught out in the same way!

Wow! Here is what Amazon have just emailed me. I'm sure I didn't ask for One-Day Delivery as there was no rush for the item:

When you placed an order on the 24 October 2014 , you chose the following delivery option: “One-Day Delivery with a free trial of Amazon Prime (1 business day)”.

While you weren't charged at sign-up, your membership is upgraded to a paid membership plan for your own convenience once the trial period ends.

As you didn’t cancel your membership before the trial period ended, our system automatically charged you the annual membership fee for Amazon Prime, £79.00.

However, our records indicate that you haven't used your Amazon Prime membership, so it doesn’t seem that the Amazon Prime service is something you’d benefit from.

I’ve now cancelled your Amazon Prime membership and requested a refund of £79.00 for the membership fee.

PS
I have checked my order for that DVD in October. The only delivery option was for same day despatch i.e. next day delivery so I didn't know that meant I was signing up for the free trial. What a scam!

At least it looks like you're getting the money back. Lucky you noticed it on your statement.
I tried the 30 day trial but ten cancelled it as it wasn't really of much benefit, to be honest I find their normal delivery times to be perfectly adequate, the prime thing would only be of use if I was wanting to download a lot of stuff to view,

As a slight aside, I've just been buying some CDs of music which I've had on Vinyl LP for 40-odd years and which are all but worn out. Now, if you buy an album from the Amazon Digital Music Store for £8.99 (which is just a collection of MP3 files) you're able to download them immediately. Fair enough.

If, however, you select the desired album as a CD at (say) £3.99, you will in many cases get an "AutoRip" link once you've checked out. The AutoRip is a link to the equivalent MP3 download - so you get the physical CD through the post and the download set for £5.00 less than the download only.

So now, I can download my purchases immediately and import them into iTunes (and onwards to my portable devices) while also having the re-mastered CDs for playing in the higher-quality kit.

Is it a no-brainer or what?

Hi Eileen

We both got stung for this. I can only assume that there's a box we did/didn't tick sneakily buried somewhere. To be fair we both complained and got prompt refunds. Still a bit sneaky
