|
|
My eyes were opened watching this tribute to Dame Vera Lynn as to just how much she contributed in keeping up the morale of our troops abroad during the second world war.
The old soldiers, featured in this tribute, spoke of her with much admiration and affection. Very moving to watch. She made a big difference to their time overseas.
A remarkable woman who is celebrating her 100th birthday...I hope she has a lovely one!
A birthday tribute celebrating the life and work of Dame Vera Lynn, seeing her humility shine through as she really can't understand what all the fuss is about.

What a touching tribute this show was, not just to Vera but to the servicemen who spoke so movingly of her contribution to their lives. I cried during this programme , in part because Vera looks so much like my late mother who was Vera's contemporary. |

I watched it and recorded it, as my love for Vera knows no bounds.
Also caught a little of the Sunday night R2 one. I had no idea it was on, so a nice surprise when I switched the radio on in the kitchen.
As an aside, Paul McCartney, who was on the programme tweeted (yes, I know...) that he had tweeted about Vera, Chuck Berry and found that his driver's name was Dave. Anyone who is familiar with When I'm Sixty-Four, will know the connection. As Harry Hill would say...what are the chances of that happening..? _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

A nice little chat with Sir Macca, courtesy of 6 Music...no Vera or Dave, but a little Chuck.

I'm listening to and enjoying this as I type...thanks Raver. John W wrote: |
There's another British lady band singer who turned 100 recently, Helen Clare, who is still very alert as was seen on TV at the time (see youtube link), there's another tribute for her filmed at the Dorchester Hotel, I think it's on TV next week.

Can't say I 've ever heard of Helen Clare,John. She looks and sounds well for 100,much like our Vera. |

There were a lot of fine lady singers during WWII.
Vera Lynn is best remembered but just as popular at the time was Anne Shelton, and there were others on records and radio like Helen Clare, Beryl Davis, Doreen Villiers, Dorothy Carless, Julie Dawn (who was later a Radio 2 broadcaster with her Penfriend programme, broadcast three times a week to listeners who lived alone).
Julie Dawn died in 2000.
