George Martin the producer often known as the 'fifth Beatle' has died aged 90.

Ken had just done a nice tribute taken from when he did Tracks of My Years on his show some years ago, Including the wonderful Goodness Gracious Me with Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren.
There is another programme tonight at 10pm from the Record Producers series featuring George Martin.
RIP

Sad news to wake up to this morning,Helen.
Lovely words of tribute from both Paul and Ringo.. and a clip of John on the news but no mention of George which made me sad.
There must be some footage, somewhere,of him talking about Sir George.
R.I.P Sir George and thank you. x

A very sad loss despite the fact he lived to a decent age
Quite frankly I don't think that The Beatles ever had the quality to make it big - or even at all - without his expertise skill and guidance
I'm not the biggest Beatles fan in the world but George Martin was responsible for turning them into not just a successful early sixties chart act but for all the things which followed including the classic releases of the late sixties which bore little relation to the early stuff
He really deserves all the tributes he's getting today - a true musical genius _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Watched an interesting documentary last night on BBC4 all about his life..... a very charming and clever man, with an ego firmly under control.
I didn't realise he started out making comedy records: Goodness Gracious Me, Right Said Fred, and many Goons recordings in an unlikely repertoire.
Also Cilla : Alfie, Anyone Who Had a Heart and others.
He went very deaf over the years - attributed to his recording studio work, and particularly affected certain frequency ranges - a subject he spoke about with good humour, but also some sadness.
Recommended viewing. Top bloke. |

I think I watched that one when it was first on and it was really good as you said. I knew about the Goons connection at the time and he also made an album of instrumental versions of Beatles songs (released in 64 so very early ones) with the George Martin orchestra. My Mum had the LP and gave it to me a long time ago. John Lennon wrote the sleeve notes, (what were they the youngsters of today will ask!!) and ended with a poem typical of his wit at the time.
A very clever man. Of course it's all done by computer today........... for the better I wonder?
