I went to see this last night. What an unforgettable film! It was so cleverly done, it was touching and funny and the performances from Dame Maggie Smith and Alex Jennings (he played a double role as Bennett the writer and Bennett the man conversing with each other) were outstanding.
It was fun to spot so many actors who had appeared in The History Boys film - a sort of Alan Bennett repertory company! |

I went to see this today,Eileen, and I agree that is an unforgettable film.
It made me laugh and it made me cry. What a woman Mary/Margaret was and (very)lucky I think that it was Alan Bennett's door she eventually landed outside. I love him. I really can't see many people doing what he did.
It wasn't entirely factual,as we were told, but I would like to think that Miss Shepherd did ask Alan to hold her hand on her last night. Maggie Smith sat playing that piano, with not one word said, was a master class in acting.
A wonderful film that I would be more than happy to sit through again. |
