I suppose 50 years ago most of us were listening to the brand new Radio 1 rather than the more sedate Radio 2 but there are a few specials on this week worth a mention.

Monday at 10pm Paul O'Grady's 'Story of The Light Programme' a 2 part series.

Then on Tuesday at 10pm Johnnie Walker meets the BBC's Pop Pioneers. He talks to several Pirate pioneers and some producers and DJs including ex Radio 1 DJ David Symonds who later came over to Radio 2, and who I think Ruddles used to enjoy. His Radio 2 shows were some of the first I listened to.

Monday and Wednesday at 10pm sees Johnnie Walker's new series of Long Players which are all from 1967.

Indeed I did Helen - although I was musical from an early age David Symonds really changed my life when it came to appreciating sixties music

I recall he was treated extremely shabbily by BBC management at that time when it was alleged that a small amount of weed was found in his bag during an outside broadcast when he was probably just one of many in that position - there was evidence suggesting that it was planted anyway

It was good to see him rehabilitated on Radio 2 where the management at the time rather more lived in the real world and could appreciate his talents and not just a possible minor weakness Smile

I will listen with interest to Paul's programmes to see what memories they bring back for me. The radio memories uppermost in my mind from back then consist mainly of Radio Caroline and Radio Luxumbourg. (Oh,and Mum listening to the cricket. Smile

)

In our house lots of time was spent listening to the latest hit records on our Dansette (think it was) record player I have four older sisters and every week that came round one or the other of them bought their favourite hit record and straight onto the record player it went. The record player always seemed to be spinning round. Very Happy

The radio was always on at home when I was a child and mainly the Light Programme late from the late 50s onwards.

My memories are of Family Favourites, Billy Cotton Bandshow (Sunday lunch taken care of!) then Movie Go Round (loved that signature tune) and vague memories of Down Your Way (another good tune). If off school I'd hear Housewives Choice, Music While You Work and of course Mrs Dale's Diary. I can vaguely remember Worker's Playtime as well being on in the background.

Enjoyed the first programme about The Light Programme. Near enough all of the programmes mentioned were familiar but some only,I think, because Mum and Dad had the radio on. I don't remember actually sitting and listening to a lot of them ...they were just there... Very Happy

One programme, that I forgot to mention in my first post was Saturday Club....and how could I forget it! Oh how I loved Saturday Club. Now that I listened to avidly.

I don't remember Movie Go Round,Helen..perhaps if I heard the music it might be familiar...

Becky I forgot about Saturday Club as well and was it Easy Beat on Sundays? I remember Dad listening to that.

The Carousel Waltz was the theme for Movie Go Round. Mum listened to it after Sunday lunch and I would be 'playing' or whatever as of course everything was closed back then.

I've listened to half of the Light Programme but must catch the others.

The Carousel Waltz is a big favourite of mine,Helen. I probably missed that programme because after Sunday lunch we used to get ready to go to Grandma's. I loved going. The table was always laden with lots of yummy things she had baked. Very Happy

I have always loved The Carousel Waltz and used to listen to Movie Go Round too. Desmond Carrington and Spencer Hale used to have a section each week on a current new film.

I STILL haven't listened to last Monday's programme.

Just caught up with part 2 of the Story of the Light. A lot I didn't recall but a lot that I did, great memories.

I know it was supposed to be about 50 years of Radio 1 but I was absolutely astonished on the news item showing several people who had never used a radio set....... Shocked

Did anyone else see it?
