Yes, on my first trip to Edinburgh the other year I was so amazed that shops were open on Sundays I insisted on going to ASDA at half past Midnight! Brilliant.

Anyway, I love Scotland - so lovely. I've been to the Edinburgh Fringe 3 years in a row and have already booked for this year.

All that talk about splitting the Union - can Lancashire go with the Scots rather than the Londoners, please...?

ooh, and I also discovered that had I been through the english schooling system I'd still be in my last year thiss year, rather than a Fresher!
I'm the youngest in my year here... but in old Ecosse you can go to Uni at 16!

Not if you go to Stornoway, they don't.... everything shuts on a Sunday, shops, pubs, museums, even the airport and the ferries. You have to really plan ahead as to where you're going to get food and drink on a Sunday in the Western Isles, never mind petrol.... Shocked

Aye, and the free sight tests, free dental check-ups for under-25s, and all the other things the Executive have signed off on.... Smile

Do you not have to pay a reduced rate tuition fee since you're studying outside of Scotland, or have SAAS changed that now?

Ah Scotland, beautiful, picturesque, stunning highlands, the smooth juice of the malt and barley; but what a pity about the locals Wink

Don't know what you mean Julia, or could it be a reference to my uncle, he moved to Torphins, as an oil worker, in the late 60's/early 70's, from Derbyshire. He wore a kilt at my cousin's wedding, had a pipe band, she like me was born in Derby Royal Infirmary. However, she did marry a real local from Aberdeen, yes he wore a kilt to get married in tooooooooo.

So have you ever had one of those Scottish delicacies, then Julia - a deep fried Mars Bar? Laughing

This might be a great place for me to ask if anyone can recommend any good "record" shops arounf the centre of Edinburgh as I'm heading over there at the end of next month!

hey shaky - don't know about Edinburgh - but THE record place in Glasgow is Mono (King Street) it's fab - it's a music cafe where all the music people hang out (oh, come on, it's only 1hr from the burgh and the weegies are way better!)

Neds (masculine) and Bams (feminine) are chavs and 'chavettes', townies, whatever you call them - neds and bams are what we call them

Never (thank god!) had a deep fried marz bar - but they are popular - it's just what you can get in the chippie I think... no wonder Glasgow has the heighest heart attack rate and people in Iraq (I was shocked to read in the newspaper) have a higher life expectanc rate than glaswegians! Shocked

hope I've answered all your questions Very Happy

I quite like kilts - but when it's windy they are a PAIN!

Depends what (if anything) you wear under one, I suppose. It has been known to get quite blowy around the Trossachs.... Smile

kilt flying up is not pleasant (no matter what you have on underneath) and means you have to walk around clinging your thighs Embarassed

Thanks Julia!

A trip to Glasgow might be a bit much - I'm only there for the day. Besides - Glasgow is probably still recovering from my visit there last year. Its becoming something of a tradition for me now - 2 years ago I was in Dublin for my birthday, last year it was Glasgow and this year it will be Edinburgh.

And just in case it gets stormy I'll leave my kilt at home! Smile
