I took a train from Bristol to Paddington earlier today. I sat in the quiet carriage and put my ipod on (really low) whilst I did some work at one of the tables on the train.

No sooner had I done this than some woman went and got a train conductor to tell me to turn it off.

When he arrived he did in fact NOT tell me to turn it off but politely told the woman she was making a fuss and that he could NOT hear my ipod at all. I "smiled" the woman who went and got the conductor fumed and snarled all the way to London.

Is the quiet carriage meant to be completely non gadget free. I would be interested to know for the future.

Hi Mark,

I think the lady was out of order. She should have asked you to turn it down (if she could hear it).

I do the same when I'm on a train or plane - listening mostly to podcasts, which are mostly speech. I'd have told her to get stuffed!

I overheard this reply in response to a similar though more direct request to turn down an inaudible Walkman on a Metro carriage once:

"Madam, I think you are incredibly ugly but I prefer to keep my thoughts to myself. Kindly do the same."

I forget which film it was, but I recall Walther Matthau buying a "ghetto blaster" off someone who was playing it loudly on the NY subway, opening the window and throwing it out.
Now that's the way to deal with mobiles on the tube.............. Idea

In "Star Trek 4-The Voyage Home" Mr Spock did a Vulcan nerve grip on a punk rocker playing a ghetto blaster too loud on a San Francisco bus. The punk was played by Kirk Thatcher, the guy responsible for the TV series "Dinosaurs".... "Gotta love me!"

I really need to get out a bit more! Laughing

Oh, AndyAndy2 will confirm I'm an SF nerd (although I've never managed to get away with Star Wars, funnily enough - too campy for me) .... I've just finished watching the boxed set of "Firefly" last night, never having seen it before. A truly under-rated show if there ever was one, whilst it was criminal that it got canned after less than one series. Crying or Very sad

Have you seen the re-vamped series of "Battlestar Galactica"?

It's probably the hardest-hitting drama on TV at the moment.

It's tackling all the issues others fear to touch, whilst being superbly entertaining.

Hi PJ-One of my closest friends -a producer with the BBC, keeps raving about BG-he says it is the best programme on TV.

Have not watched it yet but with both his recommendation and yours I might start tuning in.

It's that good is it?

Mark,

Yep, I thoroughly recommend it.

It's into the 3rd series now, so you'd probably need to lay hands on a box set to get the full story, but it's well worth it.

The best way to describe it is that with the sci-fi element it's a superb series.... and if you ignore the sci-fi aspect it remains an excellent, thought-provoking drama.

Not your cup of tea I'm sure, but I love the old 50's science fiction, Forbidden Planet type stuff. I read all the US comics when I was a kid, Forbidden Worlds, Fantastic Tales etc etc..

I was really chuffed when I recently bought two CD's (mp3 format) containing 176 old US radio Sci Fi shows! yes, 176 shows and all for about £5 over Ebay.
One's called Dimension X and the other is Space Patrol ( not the stupid UK puppet show )
Fantastic value and very enjoyable.....

I'm a '52 model myself.. Laughing
I still like the earlier style of Sci Fi, specially the pilot show of Star Trek, that showed traits of the 50's stuff. I was disappointed with the last series which was supposed to be "pre Kirk"?. I was hoping for a complete series of older style stuff!
In fact I thought it was terrible... Voyager for me.

The original Star Trek set the standard, but my personal favourite was The Next Generation..... Make it so, Number 1! Laughing

Would quite happily have strangled that little git Wesley Crusher though- irritating little oik! Very Happy

PJ, yes, I have the boxed sets for the new series of Battlestar Galactica S1 and S2. Grew up on all of the Gerry Anderson stuff (UFO, Captain Scarlet, Thunderbirds) in the mid-1970s, remember watching Star Trek TOS for the first time about then, but really got going when TNG started. Liked DS9 when it got going, Voyager was ho-hum (sorry, JanewayDar!) for a while until the Borg showed up, whilst Enterprise was flawed from the start - the only episodes I liked were the Mirror Universe ones....

I also love the original BBC b&w Quatermass stories (have them on DVD - much better than the films), and got scared silly at the time the fourth one was shown in 1979. Would love to see the 1954 BBC version of 1984 if it survives. Have both boxed sets of the original Outer Limits, which I always preferred to The Twilight Zone, even though the latter was much more popular.

I wasn't frightened by many things when I was young, with the exception of Quatermass of course!! Shocked but one of the Outer Limits programmes did frighten me.
It was about a man who had contacted an alien being which appeared on a large viewing screen as a very bright creature.
Don't remember too much else but at the end, the creature actually came through the screen to earth.
For some reason that one did the trick...

Ah, I loved the Gerry Anderson stuff... Captain Scarlet was my personal favourite- not to mention that in my youth I looked a bit like him too. Sadly those looks have faded.... Mine, not his Laughing

UFO was great, too, but for some reason could take or leave Thunderbirds. I think it was because they all seemed so smug. Lady Penelope & Parker were the best characters in it.

"The Galaxy Being", with Cliff Robertson - the second episode televised.

Best episodes were "Soldier" (on which "Terminator" is based), "The Invisibles" and "Don't Open ''Til Doomsday".

Chersk, me also the Nurd Embarassed Loving the new BG, haven't got sky so waiting till box sets come out. Mind you I prefer this as me and my girlfriend go through a disc a night!!

Quatermass is a favorite of mine too, the tv version of "...and the pit" was very evoking, dark images and hobb street whirlwinds, great!

I love the film Logan's Run - had to go onto an American web site (CD Universe) to get the soundtrack.

Hey,Chersk - you read the Foundation series? What do you think?

I know, I know, we're getting off thread here.....

That's what thread are for.... you should try Usenet some time! Laughing

Foundation - is that the Isaac Azimov series from yonks ago? Bought the original three about thirty years ago (I started reading hard SF *very* young!) but never got through the first 100 pages of the first one - too hard going at the time. I still have them, really should dig them out as I have enjoyed some of the author's short story collections ("Victory Unintentional" in "The Rest of the Robots" being my favourite).

However, I discovered the publisher Baen Books about ten years ago, though, and never looked back - http://www.baen.com/scheduleXML.asp - for the latest releases. Some earlier works are available via free download, one of Baen's little quirks. Stirling's "Draka" series, Weber's "Honor Harrington" series, Moon's "Herris Serrano" series, Weber and White's "Starfire" series and Ringo's "Posleen War" series are all wonderful reads if you like mil SF.

Sorry to go back to the original subject but this is a topic that really irritates me. I've no problem with someone listening to an ipod if they keep the volume to a reasonable level but unfortunately there are a large number of people who insist on playing the bloody things at full volume. It is even more irritating when the person concerned sleeps for the whole journey and is clearly not even listening to it. I remember one occasion a few years ago when I tried asking someone to turn the volume down a bit but had to give up because no amount of tapping them on the shoulder was going to wake them!

Blimey! how about that? I must have seen it the first time it was broadcast then.
Thanks Cherskiy, I'll keep an eye on Ebay for the set, I liked Outer Limits and Twilight Zone.
Another story I remember is some astronauts arrive on a planet ( maybe earth) and everybody is standing still - motionless. They eventually decide they are trapped in a different time speed..
Later that night, me and my pals speculated on the fun you could have with everybody motionless and unaware of your presence...... Wink

Yes it is, Chersk - give it another go. And thanks for the link, looks great this early in the morning. Speaking of which, day off is it? Always guaranteed to find a Chersk post early in morning Wink
