Government Advert released about rasing public awareness about Swine Flu. I think this could make people panic?

The commercial is OK, very 21st century, very dry.
This, from the 1950s, was a bit more memorable

Of course, they probably daren't show the best, by far - Tony Hancock, in The Blood Donor, reciting the words on the poster on the waiting room wall, to the tune of the old German national anthem (Deutschland uber alles)

as if the public aren't panicing yet, if they are the panicing type, due to the media hype
Why panic, the video only shows the truth about how things spread.? |

Of course any government is right to show concern re this issue but it isn't half being hyped--not so much by our own Government but by the World Health Organisation and others, aided and abetted as usual by the media.

So, why haven't they shut the borders and airports in Mexico?
For my nose and sneezes I've always been a 'hankie' person, my missus says I should now carry tissues.
Ever since I started to trim my nasal hairs my nose runs more often |

I don't see people panicking. All I see is media people panicking to cover the story from a different angle than others. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Putting your hands over your nose and mouth when sneezing isn't going to stop people catching a cold? A sales assistant sneezed in Tesco at the counter in her hand, but she never rushed out to the bathroom to wash her hands. Or dear me, I might catch a cold now? |

Is that a question or a statement, Mark? I'm confused. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Mark, this thread is about precautions against Swine Flu, not the common cold |

Since I live in Cambridge no, it would be a bit of a detour to get to work
In all seriousness are people not using the tube because of this then Mark?

I am confused, and not a little suspicious.
The media are treating this "swine flu" virus, to which the scientists have given the label H1N1, as if it's a serious threat to human existence on the planet, far surpassing plagues of biblical proportions, nuclear war and the possibility that the planet will fall into a black hole.
The Government has ordered 32 million face masks. Without googling to find out the exact population of the UK, are we supposed to wear them in tandem (like the old song about "the bicycle made for two")?
On the other hand, Dr Rosemary Leonard was asked on BBC Breakfast, what was the difference between swine flu and the normal flu people get in winter, and her response was nothing, except it's out of season. There is also this report - http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/266988,leadall-new-virus-less-lethal-than-bird-flu-sars-cases-grow.html - which assures us that it is less serious than Bird Flu (H5N1), which we all got excited about last year, or SARS, five years ago.
Is all the fuss supposed to take our minds off the various financial and political incompetances in the world, or do they know something nasty that they're not telling us?

Eh,
Of all the case in UK nobody is actually very ill, in fact they can stay at home and recover from the mild symptoms.
Meanwhile in the last month around 240 have died in UK and many more seriously hurt.......
...... based on figures for 2007:
There were a total of 247,780 casualties of all severities.
2,946 people were killed,
27,774 were seriously injured,
217,060 were slightly injured.
Oh, it's the figures for road accidents.
Shall we ban cars?

I think the best media coverage I've sen on the subject so far is on the front cover of Private Eye. Private Eye always gets the real story bang on the nose. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

I think the media have fallen flat on their feet now with this story. They thought it was going to turn into a big story. 600 world wide cases at present. Wow thats a lot..... |

So it kind of goes "oh blast, I've got the flu" *sniff, cough, etc* " know I'll just stay in until it goes away" bit like 'normal' flu really.
Storm in a teacup, mountain out of mole hill and other such phrases spring to mind. |

Don't you mean "on their faces"? Falling on your feet implies that you've come out of it OK, doesn't it? _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |
