Is the message board running a little slow at present and blew a fuse, which made it go off line for a little while?

I couldn't access it a few minutes ago ......... might we need a better server before the current one cracks under the load? |

Uhm.........
This is a free server. At the moment I think it will suffice us.
As with all things that are free, there is bound to be some issues, but nothing too serious hopefully. The only time we will consider moving or upgrading, is if the service suffers. The odd few minutes downtime is acceptable at the moment, but we will have to see what the future holds. |

Fair enough, I wasn't complaining, just warning you of the slight problem lest it becomes more of a problem when we have even more users (don't want to put people off coming here, etc). |

The hosts have countless forums like this running at the same time..sometimes they do slow down, but they are in the process, I have been told, of upgrading their servers. _________________ I may not always be right

I know arcader, was something that worried me too. Being on a free forum there are certain things we can't do.... and proper backups is one of them. So it's a little concern if the site does go down, so we may have to move server at some point - but if we do it will be a nightmare. |

Would sure be a shame if there were problems like that, especially at this important 'getting established' stage. |

I've been with them since July, and no real probs, apart from the slowing down.. And I think the hosts have a back up system.

Phew, cheers for that woody.
I can actually backup all of the actual webpage. ie : the posts and threads... so If we had any problems, I could just upload those to a webpage and we could start a new forum. But now I know they do a backup, I have no need to worry. |

You could do your own backup, just to be on the safe side - belt & braces and all that. |

The problem with the speed running slowly is that the board is inevitably running on a shared server, and that means lots of boards all connecting to MySQL databases at the same time. It's a common problem with phpBB in particular, but especially so on a shared server. The solution is to move to a dedicated server - but days are early yet! However, more members + more posts means that things can only get slower.
Speaking from experience, by the way.

It's still running slow posting threads and messages. Is there a slight problem? |

Mark - see my post above yours. It's sporadic - and directly related to the volume of traffic in and out of the server at any one time. There's no way whether John will know whether there's a specific problem - unless the whole lot falls over, of course.
