My suggestion is to limit the number of words or characters in a single post, so that discussions flow, rather than get bogged down in unnecessarily long wordy prose. Might I suggest a number of characters, greater than a tweet but fewer than several chapters of war and peace?

Is this posted in response to your comment elsewhere that this place "lacks a sense of humour"? |

"This" being what you have posted here, in which case, almost certainly, or "This" being what I posted above, in which case, no. |

There are other forums for quick/short postings. On this forum and over at R3ok and FoR3, I find long postings very informative, giving more to respond to, in effect a fuller discussion where folks can explain exactly what they are on about. _________________ -

As you'd have expected, John, I agree with you. This forum, historically, has seen lengthy threads on all manner of topics and containing some detailed comments in support or against views in the debate. I see nothing wrong with that.
For short posts, there's always Twitter. |

Ok it was just a suggestion. I'm tempted to note for the record, that ironically, the most popular and most responded to thread, is the thread in which only one word is posted at a time but I hear what you say. |

It's not correct anyway to say that only one word is posted as frequently participating posters have conversations about everything from weather conditions to holidays and in my case even classic cars _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

True. But technically those conversations are off topic, since the thread is a game of posting one word at a time. I think I'm beginning to understand though why few people post here. Looking through lots of the old posts (I have time on my hands) there have been some really interesting , funny, exciting and quite brilliant posters here in the past. It looks like I arrived after the party is over , which is a pity. Where have all the cowboys gone? |

I think all forums - or should that be fora - technical Latin plural - are experiencing a loss of posting traffic quite simply because of the likes of Facebook and Twitter - if you wants posts of brief inane drivel then that's where you go
However if you put quality before contemporary popularity then a specialist forum can be a very good place
By the way I don't especially want 300 new members on this forum - I'd just like many of the already existing members to get off their lazy backsides and start or resume posting _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Indeed. And therein lies the rub (whatever that means - I never was sure). The problems are numerous. True, "social mejia" has stolen the user base to some degree, but forums that use phpBB2 (the software that drives this forum on the server) are obsolete and that in itself pushes people away largely because it doesn't facilitate API feeds (those embedded links that work dynamically on places like Facebook, Twitter and also Wordpress blogsites etc). The software that runs this forum is really, really old hat and very limiting. I think users now respect the kind of cross-linking and real-time updating that others offer, but I can't see it ever happening.
Funnily enough forums themselves aren't dead - my son uses specialist forums in his pursuit of maintaining and renovating old cars (such as his 1979 Mk2 Ford Escort) and they're full of techie geeks who have solutions to every problem. He can be under the car, swearing at a problem, so he'll lookup a forum on his iPhone, ask for advice and get it immediately - all while on his back! But for general chit-chat and debate the forum has largely had its day. Sadly that's the case here, too. People can't be bothered and have lives to live.
Where have all the cowboys gone? They've gone west, I reckon. |

or could it just be that Radio 2 is so boring for the most part there just isn't much to post about?
Bring back the Chris Evans debate I say... yes, those were the days... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Chris Evans mentioned me just this morning, so he still reads this forum, even if he doesn't post here any more. Happy to re open the CE debate, although history has shown us the detractors were wrong. |

Oh yeah...........
I wouldn't know about your mention as I don't listen or know your real name.

That word "detractors" in the context of the Evans debate is one that brings on a feeling of deja vu. Now who does that remind me of?
PS: No, I don't listen in the mornings either so I don't care what happens on R2 at breakfast time. Radio 4's Today programme is much more fun by comparison. |

It does seem to me that the tone of the postings may be considered remeniscent of a historical (legendary ??) poster whose name suggests he may be descended from a one-eyed, one armed naval chappie - own up Scotty _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

Scott would have registered three or four identities by now - and they'd all be arguing with each other and calling for somebody to be axed! |

Deja Entendu, to be pedantic.
Deja Vu was a very good Crosby Stills Nash and Young album from 1970, not that Radio 2 (Mon-Fri 9 to 5) would know anything about that. |
