|
|
More and more shows on Radio 2 seem no longer to have playlists which I find somewhat annoying! I don't have time to listen to every show I've missed on iPlayer so a playlist is a way of whittling down the list.
It seems to be happening more on shows that are obviously pre-recorded (I've no problem with that) than live output. Now I would have thought that would be an easier task than on a live show. The tracks have to be sought in the first place so why can't the title and artist not be listed for when the show goes out?
I can't see it costing THAT much for the producer to 'cut and paste' from the online 'library' (I know that's not the correct term but I'm sure you know what I mean).
Anyway that's my rant for the day!

I too know where you are coming from Aitch! I have always hated it when you hear a track that catches your attention, you wait to hear who the artist was & the title of the track, only to be left 'high & dry', and probably feeling very annoyed at the lack of track info, and too much of the annoying trailer that was probably responsible for that 'Steve Wright moment', and which you've probably heard a million times already. I really must stop exaggerating!! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

The reason must be that they don't want us to realise how many times they play Olly Murs. |

Just to add to my first post, how are you supposed to use their much publicised 'Playlister' if they don't put out playlists???
The mind boggles!

The odd thing is that there's no need for any human activity in the publication of playlists to a web interface. It's not like somebody has to read the running order and then retype it into a webpage any more than iPlay requires people to hit the "record" button on all transmitted output!
The scheduled programme running order is in the play out server, and this info is available to be pulled automatically into other applications as required (the "metadata" file). It's how users of iTunes can share their own playlists across various devices and essentially the way that social media servers enable posts, etc., to be shared around.
I'm convinced Radio 2's reluctance to allow its web server to pull the data automatically is to hide the number of plays of Olly Murs' records. |

That's what I thought Colin, but if you look at some playlists you'd think a 5 year old had put them on the website. Some titles start surname first, and if it's a duet one starts with the surname and the other with the first name.........totally crazy.

They obviously don't care, despite the fact that it would probably cost only a few hours of a developer's time. I guess the money is needed to pay Chris Evans' contract fees. |

Helen, the woeful mistakes on the playlists always make me laugh. Apparently JW's SOT70s yesterday played 'Take It Easy' by The Beagles! |

That's surely a definite clue that human beings (or a sub-species of) are definitely involved in the list-generation process! |

Exactly Colin! I suspect they're all twenty something 'researchers' who went to 'Uni' and have never had a proper job.
Another thing that amuses/annoys me about the playlists are the inappropriate photos. Whenever Johnnie Walker's SOT70s plays a Stones' song (which is always Brown Sugar because that's the only song they did in the 70s) the photo is a mid 60s one with Brian Jones. |

Oh no, he's still not playing Olly Murs is he??????
I'm not back at work until the 2nd and was hoping that maybe Bruce might've stopped playing him every day but I guess I'm clutching at straws.
I suppose he's still going to be playing that Avici record for the next seven weeks as he did with their last one. |

When Claudia was doing his show last week the music was a bit better, though it was probably still the numpty Gary Bones producing as he never seems to have a holiday .
Still, at least KB has stopped going on about Christmas. I expect he will resume the subject in August as usual. |

They're probably unpaid interns - you know the sort, the "uni" media studies graduates who are lucky enough to have parents who continue to pay for their upkeep and not forcing the BBC to eat into Evans' reported £500,000 p.a. contract fee.

According to Compare My Radio, Murs and Avici are the 2nd and 3rd most played records on all of UK radio. In the last month, Radio 2 has played Olly Murs 52 times - good compared to Pirate FM (Cornwall), who've played him 223 times! But even my local commercial station, Real Radio Northwest, only played him 27 times and they're always creaming themselves at the slightest mention of the guy. |

52 times, crikey, imagine if radio 2 didn't have to have some specialist shows after 7 o'clock. I expect that figure would be more like 100 times in a month!!!
I just don't understand why radio 2 has been allowed to become like a third rate commercial station during the daytime.
They were told by the BBC trust that they had to cater more for older people who they have virtually abandoned in the space of 10 years.
Why are they just chasing the same audience as virtually every other radio station?
Going back to the BBC Trust report, does anyone remember they said for some reason that there should be more speech radio during the day?
I couldn't understand why they said that, but just after that they started doing some sort of comedy play thing on Ken Bruce show, that was really embarrassing. |

Oh I remember that and it was truly awful.
Maybe it was because speech radio is supposedly cheaper?

Not really. They used to have the book readings and comedy shows but can't afford them anymore (damn writers) so I think JV's show counts instead. I suspect French & Saunders and Miranda may do too - have them talk a lot in the hope of being funny, so that's it's the required percentage of "speech" |

JV's show, and JY before him, has always had pretty much the same amount of speech so it can't have changed the percentage.

Yes, I agree. It could be argued that more speech content = longer links between the same old excruciating music choices, and longer links could also result from more inane waffle! |

Ah, but back in JV's day they probably didn't even have percentage ratios for music vs speech - but they did have The News Huddlines every week. I think the figures are being fiddled nowadays to hit targets without spending much money. |

Sure, but that particular show hasn't changed it's content so it doesn't affect anything at all.

Sometimes there isn't a play list at all. Don Black's show was bad for that.
The Beagles has featured more than once, sometimes tracks are omitted from the play list entirely, sometimes they are duplicated.
Perhaps they could stop using celebs and use some of the money on proper staff, rather than this lot of work experience mediocrities. _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

As I mentioned above, there's no need for them to rely on humans at all. The whole play out system is semi-automated so it's quite an easy job to pull the playlist data feed from the system and push it into the Playlister page.
I can't figure out why they don't do it - obviously nobody cares. |

Bill Kenwright's shows this series haven't had playlists either.
Maybe a letter to Feedback could do some good or at least highlight the problem? Not sure if it's on at the moment though.

I'm glad in one way of no playlist for Bill's recent programme as I missed it and looking at a playlist would only have reminded me of what I had missed. |
