Think dear Bob deserves a shout.
A true legend in my book-I first discovered Bob via the Old Grey Whistle Test. |

I have always had a great deal of respect for Bob. I listen to his country show, and when it was on between 10:00pm Sat-1:00am Sun I used to hear the opening hour (sometimes two hrs) and record the rest (no 'listen again' in those days) Thanks to Bob, I discovered 'The Drive By Truckers' & Eve Selis amongst others. He has shaped my record buying much more than the playlist has done. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Must admit, I go through phases, but it felt weird being in the car at midnight tonight and it was Alex Lester not Bob playing the tunes. That's just not right. |

I know what you mean Ian. Both Janice & Alex have always been favourites of mine, just like Bob has. I still miss being woken up by Alex in the midweek mornings. That was really brought home to me in the run-up to last Christmas when Alex had his show extended into the early morning, he was followed by Richard Allinson. Yes, that was the radio 2 that I loved & still miss so much. Time was when those on the Radio 2 night shift sometimes filled in for holidaying daytime presenters, so a new audience got to hear them. I can remember Alex Lester sitting in for Ken Bruce and also on the Drivetime programme. When there was an album chart show on monday evenings, you'd sometimes hear Janice Long present that show when Simon Mayo was away, she'd also do Mo Dutta's weekend early show in Mo's absence. You even got Bob Harris occasionally covering Drivetime, particularly over the Christmas / New Year period and he was allowed to play some of his favourites from his own shows among the usual playlist tracks which added a bit of interest. Why doesn't this sort of thing happen now? No, If I was working a night shift nowadays, I'd be feeling most aggrieved at having to put up with repeats of weekend shows where once I was having fun and a laugh with Alex & Janice. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Those were the days. I don't work night shifts but I often lay awake for hours and I really miss what we had before this latest change. Alex and Richard Allinson were always good company when I needed it. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I think that whilst to most people Bob will always be a legend in broadcasting terms it's quite sad that in recent years he seems to have lost his 'cutting edge' and is now championing very bland country music which has very little connection with this country
Oh for the days of The Old Grey Whistle Test back in the early seventies when that show was a serious influence on some of the greatest ever music in my life _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

'ruddlescat', I think that might have come when he changed producers on his weekend show. I can't remember exactly when that happened, but for me, the classic time for his weekend show was when it was produced by Phil Swern. Bob used to refer to him as the 'Super Swern', I'd guess this is the same person who now produces Pick Of The Pops & Sounds Of The 60s, aka 'The Collecter'. I don't know who currently produces Bob's weekend show.
'Angela W', I've never done a full nightshift, although, in the days when I had to get up much earlier than I do now, it was Alex who woke me up on my radio alarm clock and who I heard while I was trying to come out of my semi-comatose state and also while I was bumbling & stumbling my way to work (I should point out here, that I walked to work, I didn't drive there then & still don't now) I used to envy those who did work nights as they had Richard Allinson (later Mark Radcliffe) followed by Janice Long then Alex Lester. Not so now apart from the three hours between midnight & 3:00am when those hours are divided between the latter two presenters. Sadly Vanessa Feltz doesn't do it for me, not sure about Huey Morgan (Saturdays) either. I'm all for discovering new music, but much better if the show is live, which I'm not sure that Huey's show is. Perhaps someone can confirm that one way or the other. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Until recently I used to get up for work at 5.30am and it was lovely to have Richard Allinson for a short while at the weekend. It made getting ready for work that little bit nicer, especially on cold mornings! I find Vanessa Feltz's voice extremely irritating. She doesn't come across as being very genuine and I especially hate her calling people 'lovely listeners' that just sounds ingratiating to me. (I sometimes think I am turning into a Victoria Meldrew as there is so much that I don't like any more. ) _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

Now there's a great idea for a new comedy series Angela - a reworking of the classic series with Victor's long lost daughter Victoria taking centre stage
Let's put together a script and send it to the BBC _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |
