It happens only rarely to me, but I'm afraid the current offering from Rod Stewart is one of the most rank pieces of garbage I have heard for many moons......it's like a Status Quo impersonation with bag-pipes added for good measure. |

I agree, its pretty awful, though some of the tracks off what I presume is a current album are not bad. Having said that, he's not done much since the mid 80s, and much of that was pretty dire (Baby Jane etc.).
In fact, he should have retired some time ago. He's just a parody of himself.
The same applies to Status Quo and Elton John whose output in the last 30 or even 40 years has bordered on the embarrassing. Sadly its not 1972 anymore. |

My wife's a real fan of Rod's and together we've seen him many, many times since the 1970s. In fact, she's seen him twice this year and I've seen him once - at the NEC Arena.
I will admit that choices of singles are always naff, but as a live performer he is still great. Retire? From single releases maybe but live gigs - definitely not. They're great parties! |

It's a bum cringer, is Rod's latest offering. He hasn't released anything of note, since 1971/72. I adored him then, as an impressionable 16 year old. All the lads wanted to be him. Then he went all Hollywood, and lost whatever mojo he had.
A few minutes ago, before I clapped eyes on this thread, Ken played The Killing Of Georgie...one of the most irritating records known to man. Evry time he sings " A victim of these gay days, it seems..", I immediately think of Larry Grayson.
That said, I really enjoyed the Imagine documentary on him, a few months ago...mainly for the early footage of Rod with the Bluesbreakers. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Not on stage he hasn't! I'm damned if I know where he gets his energy from.

I love that song (based on a real life friend). In fact, I turned the volume up when listening in the car earlier!

Yes, I thought he provided a very good insight into the singer. |

He's probably had himself cloned, like Chris Evans has. I always check the back seats in my car, just in case one of them sneak in while my guard was down.
I apologise for my error earlier. I should have said Steampacket, and not Bluesbreakers, which of course, is John Mayall. Senior moment. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Generally I'm quite happy listening to most music but I really can't stand Enrique Iglesias with his oh so emotional voice, especially on that song "Hero". Sadly another one of Gary Bones favourite artists. |

Could only get Smooth on the car set yesterday evening and their all time top 500 was being played (repeat i believe) - most of it listenable, but then at about 1950 the DJ said " that was the last of the chart for tonight, so I have time for one I like(???) - Sade" - then the wailing started - turned off - sounded like a cat being castrated........the horror. Didn't the DJ realise why it was not in their top 500. _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

All through 2013 I had to turn the radio off when that ghastly Get Lucky was played. The most tedious and boring song since Hey Jude and that's saying something. Any of those singers who think screeching equals emotion, especially Celine Dion (is she sponsored by Paracetamol manufacturers?) and that nonsense about Skyscrapers. Anything to do with Britain's Got Strictly No Celebrity X Factor. 90% of the stupid playlist.
Slightly off topic but the constant repetitive advertising

Me too. That's one of the primary reasons why I started to turn my back on R2 through the last year. Utterly annoying tat.

I think it's me. I'm not a fan of singalong and for someone who was always an admirer of L & M's lyrics I just think this is abominably lazy. After two mediocre verses you sing "La" eleven times follows by "Hey Jude". Repeat for a month! Then again, my other two most disliked songs are extremely popular so it's probably a good job my only experience in radio was building the desks.

Yes, I got it at the ABC Cinema in Plymouth, where I used to attend the anarchic kids' film session on Saturday mornings. I can't remember a single film I ever saw there but I can remember having a good time lobbing stuff down from the circle onto the poor suckers in the stalls!!!
A week or two before I got the badge (which I recently found in a box of my stuff when preparing my parents' stuff for a house move), The Beatles played at the same venue. My mum wouldn't let me go because she reckoned my mate Stuart and I wouldn't hear anything because of all the screaming by those silly girls in the audience! |

Mine came from the ABC in Hove. The only things I can remember were Laurel and Hardy, something called the Little Rascals (I think) and the spectacularly unfunny Three Stooges, the poor Manager (Captain Mainwaring's brother in a dinner suit) and trying fairly unsuccessfully to get some early back row action. _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

Well for me at present it has to be the dreadful version of 'God Only Knows' in aid of Children In Need and the latest dire version of 'Do they Know It's Christmas
I've nothing against the charities concerned but really - two classic tracks ruined in the space of less than one month _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Ruddles I feel the same way, both spoiled. At least JV played the original God Only Knows early this/or maybe late last week. The Band Aid track is dire (sorry that was someone else's catchphrase ). _________________ 88 - 91 FM this is Radio 2 from the BBC!

I agree with all of you. How they could ruin a Beach Boys classic, god only knows.
The original Band Aid song from 1984 was a great tune, wonderfully produced. The current one is just bland, with bland people.
And as for that Dolly Parton rubbish.....
Anyway, I'm off to BBC4 to see Pink Floyd, proper music. |

I was quite enjoying the Sara Cox breakfast show this morning when she played the Dolly Parton noise.... sorry, but it had to go.
I was quite enjoying Paddy O'Connell standing in for JV a few minutes ago, when (yes you've guessed it) dear old Dolly was given another spin....goodbye Paddy.
It's a bit like having the smoke alarms going off every hour or so.
She sings like Marge Simpson. It'll be on again in a minute. |

Did you see my name? For your information, the archive interview clips with the man himself, Jim Marshall, featured in the programme are taken from the only complete interview with him in existence and guess who not only conducted the interview (in Dec 1986) but who also owns the rights? |

Ruddles: Evans comes from Warrington but does he still live there? I used to live in Sunningdale in Berkshire and he lived/lives just a mile away. (Wasn't I lucky?).
I was worried about the adverse effect the cretin would have on house prices, so moved away. |

I thought that after more thasn three years, that I'd give thias thread a kick start.
All of those horrible pap records that are played on R2, with terrible singers and doctored vocals, and a death-inducing 'whooawhooa whhoa etc etc@ chorus. Drives me up the wall.
This is the rubbish that R2 believes in nowadays, as opposed to what it should be giving us. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

I have enjoyed reading all the posts from 4 years ago!
Radio 2 mid morning (ie Ken Bruce) has become a version of Radio One. Most of the songs are brand new and are utter rubbish. If I want to hear this drivel I'd switch to One. People of a certain age aren't going to be interested in this sort of music, all utterly unforgettable. I don't know if the producer is still the awful Gary Bones. At least the awful Steve Wright still plays 60s/70s music.
So why do I listen, I hear you ask. Well, I do like Ken's banter. He's the sort of guy I'd like to go to the pub with and have a good moan. Perhaps he should just talk instead of playing music for ten year olds. |

I used to stick with Ken, due to his cheery banter with Lynn Bowles, but increasinlgly, I have found myself switching off, due to the extremely irritating playlist and other bad music choices. I don't care if Gary Bones or Davy Jones picks it. I don't care for it. I sometimes rewind on the computer to listen to Popmaster...and sometimes will be listening along cheerfully afterwards, but it's never too long before something irritating comes along.
I'm sure Ken doesn't care for it, either. But he has many mouths to feed.
As for Steve Wright, I spent many years not liking him. I even had the name Luvdasho, when I first went on the R2 boards. But now, I find other things to get humpy about. Mind you, he also has to play some of that playlist rubbish. However, he also has the best jingles..Donald Trump and Macca never fail to raise at least a smile, and there are always plenty of oldies. And he comes from New Cross...
I tuned in on Friday, to find that Gary Davies was in the chair. Better then Ore, but I still switched over to 6 Music immediately. He will end up with a show of his own. I just know it. So it really does seem as though it's gradually morphing into Radio 1 80's lite. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Raver you're right. Whenever I hear someone standing in I sort of get the feeling that in the not too distant future it will be his or her show .
I don't listen to Ken that much either partly because I forget to switch R2 on after 9.30 and get on with something (I'm having to do 'office' work a lot these days ) and end up switching on around 11.30 for Tracks of My Years.
I too didn't like Steve for years but I don't mind him when I'm driving and for some reason I don't have the radio on at home in the afternoon, I guess it's ingrained in me to switch off when Steve starts or at least after the first few tracks. I suppose Gary Davis would be better than Ore.
80s are featuring just a little bit too much for my liking!
