One book (when it is published) that is definitely on my list to read..
Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee.
Set in the fictional southern town of Maycomb during the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman sees Scout return from New York to visit her father, the lawyer Atticus Finch.
According to the publisher's announcement: "She is forced to grapple with issues both personal and political as she tries to understand her father's attitude toward society, and her own feelings about the place where she was born and spent her childhood."
In a statement, Harper Collins' Jonathan Burnham called Go Set a Watchman "a remarkable literary event" whose "discovery is an extraordinary gift to the many readers and fans of To Kill a Mockingbird".
He said: "Reading in many ways like a sequel to Harper Lee's classic novel, it is a compelling and ultimately moving narrative about a father and a daughter's relationship, and the life of a small Alabama town living through the racial tensions of the 1950s."

I will definitely read this one, but first will have to re-read 'To Kill A Mocking Bird' which I read years ago and which I guess sets the scene for the 'new' one. |

Read Mockingbird for school, but never actually finished it! Be interesting to see how this new one turns out. |

Daughter is presently studying Mockingbird for school, so I will certainly be borrowing it for a re-read! |

Disappointed to learn that schools do not actually issue pupils with copies of the books they are studying any more.
They get photocopies of the specific pages of text they are expected to discuss, but they are not required to read the whole book.
Sigh. |

I think that a totally ridiculous thing to do..how are they supposed to get a feel of the characters or get a handle on what the book is all about if they don't read it from the beginning to end.
I only hope that some or most of the students are sufficiently piqued by the part they are given that they go and search out the book and read the whole thing! |

I'm in two minds whether or not to read it. Some reviewers say it will ruin our conception of the original characters especially Atticus as in old age he has become racist in his outlook and he was such a heroic figure.
There was a discussion about it on Radio4's Front Row this evening. It's the first item in the programme. |

I have heard the whole series now and enjoyed it. It hasn't spoiled Mocking Bird for me which is a relief. |

I have just caught up with the last few episodes of this today and like you,Eileen, enjoyed it.
That was some speech by Jean Louise in the penultimate episode...wow! (good narration)
A thought provoking listen.
I read that the young actress, who played Scout in the film, became particularly close to Gregory Peck during the filming and stayed in touch with him for the rest of his life, always calling him Atticus until his death in 2003. |
