|
|
This is a message I've sent to the BBC. I probably look like a loonie, but enough is enough!
*************
Dear All at the BBC,
I must say how great it is to again hear Mark Radcliffe on Radio 2 in the afternoons. He's witty, intelligent, full of ideas and has a real rapport with his audience. I'm sorry to say he really shames the usual incumbent of that slot.
Back in the 80s, I was a huge fan of Steve Wright but sadly he's now doing my head in. The guy is talented, and could still have much to give but he's so lazy with such little regard for his listeners that I'm not sure I can take it much more. But it's not too late - someone just needs to take a firm hand, and whip him back into the shape that made him a star in the first place.
So here is my list of Wrightisms (compiled over the last few weeks) that drives everyone in my office mad on a daily basis. A situation that I'm sure is repeated up and down the country.
1. Singing over the records - all the time! Not funny, not clever, and an example of his rampant ego trampling over everything. Does suggest a music station is not his natural home.
2. I understand the concept of the Big Show which is to have lots of features for everyone. A magazine on the radio, jam-packed. But if he doesn't much care for the features, why should we? He is always doing down Miles Mendoza's Website of the Day and rushing through it so the message gets lost. The Astrology section is always rushed and dismissed. If it's all guff, don't bother broadcasting it.
3. Repeats the news every ten minutes. Usually 10 minutes after an actual News report. Why? I can wait, thanks.
4. Presumably the news reports are an effort to make the show seem like it's broadcast Live. A lot of planning seems to go into pre-recording the show. This may be a tried-and-trusted production technique, but in an age of fakery and deception it seems another cheat on the audience. What's more, he doesn't even cover his tracks very well - too often his butterfingers will run into the next set of factoids, misplay a jingle, and even play the factoids in the wrong order - one time he promoted an upcoming interview he'd already broadcast!
5. The playlist is almost exactly the same from day to day, just in a slightly different order. I would guess that over 2 weeks you'll hear 90% of every non-playlist song he'll ever play. There was even a period when he was playing the same song twice a day. I don't think it was deliberate - just incompetence, and another example of contempt for the audience.
6. The Love Songs playlist is basically the same as every other day. What's the point?
7. He's not nearly as funny as he thinks he is. Wogan and Bruce are naturally funny presenters, but Steve Wright no longer is, and when he tries to match wits with the likes of Ricky Gervais and Ross Noble it's just embarrassing.
8. He seems to revel in the unfunny bits, often going on and on beyond anything vaguely witty. For instance, all that messing around in the lead up to the Big Quiz. But, hey, at least he gets to talk more at the expense of everyone else.
9. The 45 Minute Non-Stop Oldies are neither 45 minutes nor non-stop. On a regular show they would run from 2.55pm (at best) to 3.20pm (at latest) and contain News, Weather, News again, Factoids, More News, jingles and trailers. And the choices always seem so predictable: Brown-Eyed Girl, You Win Again, Dancing Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Love Is The Drug. I don't believe listeners would actually request all the songs he regularly plays anyway (Radcliffe's CD CV has more variety, for instance)
10. Is the only one on Radio 2 to play some terrible, terrible, kiddie records - such as Girls Aloud, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Nelly, Jennifer Lopez, and various dance tunes. If I remotely wanted to hear these dreadful cacophonies I wouldn't be tuned to Radio 2. And he plays them every single day for months!
11. Shows disdain for much of the songs - even the ones that only he plays! After an early play of Rihanna's Umbrella he said "It's alright, but I wouldn't want to hear it every day." He then played it every single day for over 3 months - thus showing both his contempt for listeners and lack of self-awareness at the same time!
12. When telling me stuff, he keeps saying -over and over- "as you know." If I already know, why bother telling me?
13. Goes on about bendy buses, Ken Livingstone, Oyster Cards, and the Evening Standard - as if there's no life outside the M25. Unless it's the US of A.
14. Keeps mentioning the weather. Usually in regards to what it's like in London.
15. Cuts records off about halfway through, usually as they're getting going.
16. Doesn't read texts or e-mails to himself before reading out loud. So he stumbles over words and generally fails to understand what he's saying (apart from the words "love the show" which merely feed his already huge ego).
17. If a text or e-mail contains a request he'll either arrogantly dismiss it out of hand (not on his usual playlist, see) or (by coincidence) play it an hour later. Sometimes he does both!
18. In the banter with Tim and Janey he doesn't actually listen to what they say and keeps repeating what they've said as if it's his big idea. We can hear them too, Steve!
19. The banter is usually ill-informed claptrap anyway. He will talk for 5 minutes on stuff he has only the slightest knowledge about (of course, sometimes he could learn something from Jeremy's show but he's too busy pre-recording to listen).
20. If during the banter or factoids he says something incorrect, the show continues anyway. No correction, no retraction, nothing.
21. Lots of celeb name-dropping that I can't relate to.
22. I quite like his interviews but sometimes I can barely hear what he's saying because he's so far up the guest's backside. A bit less fawning please or we may think he's being insincere...
23. Jingles - they never stop! So many jingles, saying his name and making him more money. If he had less jingles the show could finish on time and not rush at the end. Everyone else manages it.
24. He squeezes Sally Traffic out so he ends up doing the traffic reports himself. He seems to think this makes him a Public Service Broadcaster but it just makes him seem rude.
I am not calling for him to be sacked: just to buck his ideas up. He is complacent, coasting on reputation and the success of Radio 2. I believe listeners to the BBC deserve better - many of the above problems are common on ILR, and that's why I don't listen to ILR!
I hope you take this is in good spirit and act on my concerns, as ultimately most of these things just make him seem like an idiot. Surely he doesn't want 7 million people thinking he's an idiot on a daily basis? Although, if his intention is to be unintentionally amusing and provoke office conversation I suppose he's succeeded!
Best Regards
Ian Robinson

WOW Ian,
That was completely brilliant.
It felt like you had telepathically taken my thoughts virtually word for word.
Who have you actually sent your thoughts too?, and did you send them by letter or email?
I can't wait to see if you get a reply, and see if your points are responded too or if you just get a bog standard reply.
Everyone I know who has been a longterm Radio 2 listener feels exactly the same way as you. |

Cheers Gaz,
I've sent an e-mail to Steve.Wright@bbc.co.uk, took a guess at Lesley Douglas's e-mail, gone via the Radio 2 Feedback page and included Radio 4's Feedback radio show too. I dunno if a letter would work better but that might be overkill! |

A very lucid and intelligent email - Constructive and not insulting.
Keep us informed if you get a reply Ian (hopefully not a standard one!). _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Mark Radcliffe is far better at keeping the programme going. Emma Forbes didn't seem half as irritating as she used to be presenting on children's TV. _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.

Ian, thank you.
Your "rant" ( I would actually call it pointing out facts that BBC management should have picked-up and acted on ages ago) was perfectly aimed and executed. I hope you get an appropriate response- I'm sure everyone on the MB is waiting with eager anticipation to see if you do.
I'm sure what you've said is something many others, including myself, had wish they'd done.
I raise my hat to you, sir. _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

As I tried to say (but obviously not clearly enough) I don't want to turn off - I want to listen to Radio 2, but it's become annoying. I do, in fact, mostly listen to 5 Live in the afternoons nowadays but sometimes the wordy chat isn't as good for working against as music - but ILRs annoy me even more than Steve Wright! |

Ian,
A well thought out and lucid piece. I would like to be associated with its sentiments. Afternoons are usually 'captive radio' times. With works radio tuned to whatever the management's whim dfictates. Like you I used to enjoy SW but feel that I have now outgrown his radio style. 5live or ILR now form the basis of my afternoon commute. _________________ Geddon

I can only repeat what others have already said - thank you Ian. I wish I'd done the same although I doubt I could have put it so intelligently. It makes you wonder if anyone from the BBC management ever listen to the programme.

I predict the reply ( if you get one) will be
"Thank you for your email, which Lesley Douglas, Controller of Radio 2,
has read.
I will make sure your suggestion is discussed with senior colleagues at
the network." |

Yes, I expect you're right. To be honest, I think it's too long to be seriously considered (but once I'd started I couldn't stop).
In my experience it takes about 4 working days to get a reply off the BBC (I try and praise too, not just complain all the time). |

Toggy, Surely the whole idea of a forum(especially the gripes section) is to have a rant, or just to get your views heard.
If you had your way it would be a very boring place to be.
You could always get yourself a job as a mod on the radio 2 message board. |

I think it's quite reasonable that if a person dislikes or disagrees with an aspect of a radio service (for example, given the subject of this topic) then it's perfectly reasonable that he/she should write and complain.
Too many people moan in MB's like this when what they should be doing is complaining directly. |

Ian, as it seems I'm the only Wrighty fan on here I'd reply to some of your points as follows...
1. Singing over the records - all the time!
Other presenters sing and talk over records don't they? Mark Radcliffe did it this afternoon, talking over the beginnings and ends of tracks. In my opinion, Steve's show is not a music based show, it's light entertainment.
2.But if he doesn't much care for the features, why should we? He is always doing down Miles Mendoza's Website of the Day The Astrology section is always rushed and dismissed.
Does he or we, have to care much for the features? some of them are just rubbish! it's just lighthearted fun most of the time. Mendoza's websites are usually nothing more than laugh material either. The Astrology part isn't worth commenting on!
3. Repeats the news every ten minutes.
I suppose his, or the team's comments on some stories are vaguely funny or intersting? just time filling - magazine stuff.
4. Presumably the news reports are an effort to make the show seem like it's broadcast Live. This may be a tried-and-trusted production technique, but in an age of fakery and deception it seems another cheat on the audience.
I can't say I'm bothered whether parts are live or not, I'm sure other shows have similar sections of pre-recorded stuff?
5. The playlist is almost exactly the same from day to day, just in a slightly different order.
I think most other dj's play the same rubbish day after day don't they? I've noticed this on Ken Bruce's show for sure.
6. The Love Songs playlist is basically the same as every other day. What's the point?
Agree! bring back Ed Stuart!
7. He's not nearly as funny as he thinks he is. Wogan and Bruce are naturally funny presenters.
That's in your opinion though isn't it. I don't find Ken bruce that funny but I do laugh at some of the things Steve says.
8. For instance, all that messing around in the lead up to the Big Quiz. But, hey, at least he gets to talk more at the expense of everyone else. It's primarily a talk show.
9. The 45 Minute Non-Stop Oldies are neither 45 minutes nor non-stop. Completely agree with that.
10. Is the only one on Radio 2 to play some terrible, terrible, kiddie records - such as Girls Aloud, Justin Timberlake etc..
11. Shows disdain for much of the songs - even the ones that only he plays! After an early play of Rihanna's Umbrella he said "It's alright, but I wouldn't want to hear it every day." thus showing both his contempt for listeners and lack of self-awareness at the same time!
Can't argue with that as I don't listen enough to notice but is he responsible for the playlist? maybe the "kid's stuff" is listed because of the time slot, late afternoon, kids with mums in cars etc?.
16. Doesn't read texts or e-mails to himself before reading out loud. So he stumbles over words and generally fails to understand what he's saying (apart from the words "love the show" which merely feed his already huge ego).
All helps to generate that live show feel ! "Love the Show" is part of the gimmick both with him and his fans as I see it, same as "Togs".
Mention "Love the Show" and everybody knows who you're talking about, so it works!
17. If a text or e-mail contains a request he'll either arrogantly dismiss it out of hand
It's not a request show.
18. In the banter with Tim and Janey he doesn't actually listen to what they say and keeps repeating what they've said as if it's his big idea. Would you listen to Janie Lee Grace?? again, I haven't noticed this particularly but I can imagine what you mean. I think it's part of his character to be "on top" all the time?
21. Lots of celeb name-dropping that I can't relate to.
Come on! is he the only one to do this?
22. I quite like his interviews but sometimes I can barely hear what he's saying because he's so far up the guest's backside. ...
I don't get that. I heard the Paul McCartney interview and thought it was very good, very relaxed. I also heard the Paris Hilton interview where it was obvious to me he was taking the pi$$. Given the time he has, it can only be glossed over can't it? it's not intended to be an in depth interview.
23. Jingles - they never stop! .
I like jingles, I liked the jingles on the Pirates and early Radio 1, I don't have a problem with it.
24. He squeezes Sally Traffic out so he ends up doing the traffic reports himself.
Haven't noticed that myself but as mentioned I don't listen that often lately.
He is complacent, coasting on reputation and the success of Radio 2. I believe listeners to the BBC deserve better -
Complacent? coasting? I don't think so, no more than Wogan or Bruce. Just maybe he's part of the reason for the success of Radio 2 - as he is now?.
Surely he doesn't want 7 million people thinking he's an idiot on a daily basis?
I don't think 7 million people would carry on listening to him if they thought that would they?
I really can't stand Chris Evans so I make sure I turn over to Planet Rock when he comes on.
I can understand why somebody may dislike Steve Wright as I dislike Evans and Allinson but I don't understand why so many on here seem to hate the guy? ( shooting himself in the foot )

More than enough on a normal R2 midweek afternoon, though I have been staying longer this week. In a normal mon-fri afternoon I migrate to 6 music to avoid the likes of Wright & Evans, but it seems even 6 music is now not entirely safe as that berluddy stupid Evans trailer has polluted the 6 music airwaves a few times, so you're not safe on TV or 6 music now. Evans may be a 'golden boy' in the eyes of Ms Douglas (& Ernie) but please take note (& excuse shouting here ) I DON'T WANT TO LISTEN TO EVANS. Please can I have my 6 music safe haven from him back. If he's not pulling in the listeners then just get rid of him like you've done with the more classy DJs. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Erm... well, even if could muster it I don't think it would reach 24 points and the thing about anything after 5pm is that I'm not as captive an audience - unlike in the office, I can switch to whatever radio station I want. And, being in the car, I can't write down the annoyances when they come up!
Anyway, I don't want to dilute the main campaign - one thing at a time, eh?

I've a damn good idea about where to shove that piano
Evans also has the looks and attitude that remind me of another famous "piano" advertisement....
" 'Ere, Dad- d'you know the piano's on my foot?"
" You 'um it, son, I'll play it!"
Now that was proper comedy _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

Well said Ian. Couldn't agree more. Could I also put in a plea for someone to tell the Mediocre one that he can't do impressions and to stop that childish giggling.

Eau contraire, ....... I think Steve's Woody Allen is of world class standard, as is his Sean Connery and Walter Matthau impressions amongst others. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

What depresses me about the impressions the most is as soon as you hear a Rolling Stones song you know we're in for a burst of his chronic "Mick & Keef" take-off _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |
