We have had a covering of snow in the south east. It's very rare to have snow here.
Has anyone else woke up with snow? |

Yes, I'm in the south east too....hubby woke me up to say there's 2" of snow outside...when I went to have a peek out the window, there's only 1/2" ,if that !
I think Kent may have had more than me in Essex. _________________ You can't keep a good Tog down |

Had a slight covering yesterday morning but it had gone by lunchtime. The gritters were around last night and this morning (even in the rain) - what a waste of money.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Snow yesterday at home, snow today at work. I'm waiting for the temperature to drop a bit so we have icicles on the cooling towers again _________________ Geddon

Started snowly here in Warks. proper about 11.30pm last night as we left the pub.
Only about an inch lay this morning, and the sun is melting it. |

We haven't had snow yet but - the nighttime temperatures have dropped to -7C here and daytime is only -1C. The thick frost has not melted and has been with us for two days now. At the moment we have a thick freezing fog descending!! Delightful. Can't wait for some snow to arrive. _________________ Friends may come and friends may go, but enemies tend to accumulate. |

I'll probably end up seeing some tomorrow - heading for the hills in SW Scotland for some low-level photography.... hope the jets are out. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

It's amazing the gritters go out again putting more grit on the roads. It does make things sometimes 10 times worse? |

I think the drifts were up to 1 inch in places where the wind whipped it up. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

A light dusting in our part of Northumberland yesterday evening but it didn't lie for long.
Bitterly cold wind today but no more snow here.
How on earth did an inch of snow lead to school closures in Sussex and Kent?

Maybe the teachers are only an inch tall.... or they wanted a day off to do some shopping (I think they call them 'training days' these days).... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I know I live in the south east, but I used to live in the north. They are little pussies when it comes to a little bit of snow here or even any other crisis. Everything grinds to a halt and they all run around like headless chickens. The teachers were coming in from other places this is why certain schools were closed they couldn't get in, and a special needs school for learning difficulties and handicapped children was closed, but they have an excuse for safety reasons and school transport can't always get to them. |

An inch? It's not exactly rocket science to drive in the snow, now is it? Maybe if it was four or five inches deep, and piled up on the roadsides like it used to be when I was little, then they would have cause to panic or at least be cautious. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Rumour is that the people of the South East thought it was a terrorist attack as they had never seen white power fall from the sky before. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Yep, one of my cousins lives in Winnipeg (or 'Winterpeg' as it's sometimes called!) and he reckons Canadian winters are much, much worse than the ones he used to remember in Edinburgh thirty years ago. It regularly goes down to -20C although -41C was recorded in 1996 and the records show -47C in 1879!
Not as far down as one once recorded in Oymakon, another place I visited on my Siberian trek some years ago - they recorded -67C (-89F) there in 1933 but recent winters have only seen about -50C. Time for the sun block, methinks! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

The coldest I've been in (in USA) was -20F which I think is ~ -25C and my thumb froze to the garage padlock, I had to clasp the padlock in both my hands and it warmed up enough to free me, phew! |

Golly gosh John thought this may have taken a naughty turn! I must say the coldest I've ever been was in Boston (USA) in February. However the trains ran on time there. |

We have friends who live in Canada (Saskatoon) and I received an email from them to say they are having the worst winter for 50 years. The snow in their area is now 5 to 6 feet high .... they do have a snowblower to clear a path from their house to the main road though. _________________ Friends may come and friends may go, but enemies tend to accumulate. |

Probably fair comment Julia. It only seems to take an inch or so down here to bring things to a standstill
Marrietta. I have relations on the other side of Canada (Georgian Bay area of Ontario) where they've had little snow so far. |

38C sounds uncomfortably warm to me. 24C is my idea temperature. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I woke up to snow on Wednesday. Then I got on a plane bound for Athens. It was average 17c in Athens - and my forehead got sunburned whilst looking around the Acropolis on Thursday.
It's very rare to have snow on the Acropolis too! Coincidence?

Some is still lying around here - my late mother used to say it was "waiting for more". The council appeared incapable of gritting the roads around my estate today: odd, since they came around in January when it was raining.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

A lot of councils only grit major roads and those which use bus routes. It's silly as all roads should be gritted. |

Our street used to be a bus route (for a very small minibus type vehicle that lasted precisely a month). They've gritted it without fail since then even though its been nearly ten years since the service operated.... as I said, they do grit it, even when it's actually raining instead of snowing. Just not today.
Anyway, did anyone hear the news this afternoon - apparently the schools in Dudley, West Midlands are all shut tomorrow - even before the first flake of snow has fallen. Apparently the council are forecasting "traffic chaos tomorrow morning".... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”
