Wherever he is in the schedule, I try to listen to his shows. I think his style of broadcasting is warm, friendly, laidback and welcoming.
He has a great knowledge / love of musicianship and is basically really, really great!!
I follow him on BFBS and Radio Oxford via the net.
Yes, to m e he is Radio 2's best presenter - well underused and unappreciated. |

Andy...absolutely agree and always tune in to whenever he is on.
Very professional and knows his music.
In an ideal world i would like him on 2-5 Mon to Sat.
Richard is an all round asset to Radio 2 |

That would be a great slot, I loved it when he stood in for SW, had articulate and intelegent chats with guests - and not afraid to ask challenhing questions (all saints, if you remember).
I work as a trainer and couldn't listen to shows at time of broadcast so got my folks to tape shows all week and listened to them the following week instead of drivel time!!
Y'know, Saturdays just aint the same without his show. |

Certainly the most under-rated and under-utilised, IMHO.
Although I like SM's show on Saturdays, it's just not the same since RA was axed.
Does anyone know what his audience figures were as opposed to Dermot's?

I have followed Richard from Capital Radio to Radio 2 and occassionally listen to him on Oxford and BFBS. He does have a big fan base and he does no this, but I'm being told from Radio 2.. 'he will not be getting a show on the network.
It's such shame as he does deliver some good shows and really cares for the listeners. Not a ratings winner, just a natural home grown radio presenter. Not many of them around anymore. |

Y'know mark - doesn't that seem really strange - a huge fan base but "we're not giving him a show!" - gives the impression of stamping ones foot or a sad indication that R2 is heading for "Celeb R2".
Whatever happened to "Give the people what they want!" |

Presumably he's ruffled some feathers in the echelons of management at R2, or maybe they're so focussed on bringing in new 'talent' that they can't see what they've already got to hand.

I think the problem with Allinson is that he has some fans who follow him devotedly, but they are relatively few in number. So when they put him on the radio in a mainstream slot a few* people get wildly excited, but most are indifferent.
As Wogan famously said to be successful you need people to have an opinion on you, some will hate you but hopefully more will love you.
The problem is that Allinson leaves masses of people apathetic at best. His approach is formulaic, relying on an overused pool of prep material: tabloid newspaper stories, text-in's which are read verbatim but are not developed any further and the repetition of familiar cliches** which his regulars obviously expect/ enjoy.
Why has he never had a primetime slot on any major station: what other reason can there be?
* few, meaning relative to the total listenership of the station, which could mean several hundred or even thousands, but still small as a % of the total listeners.
** an example of the cliches/annoying phrases used include saying that the show contains "the usual old rubbish" (didn't Wogan start that one a long time before Allinson) and referring to himself in the plural as "we" _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Ok, I'll agree withg some of that but I disagree with the cliches comment.
His interviews with guests are intelligent and we actually discover something about the guests.
Yes, he may have a formula - three of best, if you like that, you'll like this, but they do seem to work.
Primetime, I would have said the Sat afternoon was primetime, hence why Evans got it (God knows why!)
Listen to him on BFBS, this is a cracking show. |

He may have been dropped so much he had given up trying to get another show on the network and wanted to broadcast on other stations, keeping the door open at the BBC to cover on Radio 2 on a yearly contract. I'am sure the BBC were looking at getting a lot of well known voices out into the local networks to rival the competition from the commercial network? |

Interviews - sometimes good, sometimes awful. It depends on the guest and whether they "get" him.
What really annoys me though [and maybe its just me as opposed to "us" ] is using the term "we" all the time. Radio should be about building a 1 to 1 relationship between the presenter and the listener. Why does he insist on bringing his imaginery friends into the equation? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I guess you mean when he plays a song and says "we like that one..".
I've taken that as a royal "we" and I don't mind it really.
But hey, different strokes for different folks |

I'm listening to his Friday show on BFBS at the moment whilst I'm catching up with some work on the PC.
He's mentioned "give us a ring" in connection with "Three of the Best" - now that doesn't bother me, but that might be a Geordie thing since if I was talking to someone and wanted them to ring me, I'd also say "give us a ring" - it's just the way we speak up here.
Good stuff so far, but then I'm biased towards RA. I'd be very pleased if they'd just repeat one of his BFBS shows (without the weather reports for Belize, Khandahar and Qatar, 'natch) instead for that pointless (insert rather infamous place name in Orkney here) that broadcasts last night between 9 and 11.
Different strokes, as Andy puts it, though.

Couldn't listen to Ocford today as in work, training staff.

It's nice to know that Richard will be standing in for Sir Terry over the christmas break.
Shame that he will not be taking over from Steve Wright in the afternoon! |

Cheers, Lord Evans - yes, I've seen these 9can you believe they still have them on the site though? these are way old!)
Then again, Richards web page could do with updating also.
Good to see another RA fan, nice one. |

I agree entirely with the majority of great comments about Richard Allinson on this thread.
I am one of his biggest fans having followed his career closely for over 20 years.
His current weekday show on BFBS Radio 2 is just superb- a fantastic music based show.
Richard is certainly back in the groove.
Why Lesley Douglas cannot see what a great presenter/DJ Richard is continues to baffle me-maybe she simply does not like him.

Mark,
20 years!!!
I only got into him about 7/8 years ago - tape some shows to listen to when nothing good on.
Agree - his BFBS shows are great, I love the format, however if I could chuck one thing out it's the chat to Hermoina (did I spell that right?!) every morning - it lasts for a good 10 minutes!!
I hope we see him back on R2 regularily, until then we have the Christmas shows to enjoy. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

He's the only presenter to ever have emailed me back, I was so shocked
I like his presenting style, it's always a pleasure to listen to him. Is he being 'retained' do you think until Sir Tel decides he's had enough...? _________________ ~*Rachel*~

Firefly,
Yes - I've received an email from him also, it's great isn't it!!
I read somwhere last year that Tel was thinking of retiring this year and that Rich was being lined up, but to be honest - I just don't know anymore - they'll probably get another 'celebrity' signing and put them in the slot.
Amazes me how they can't see we're sick of it and just want decent presenters.
I'll be emailing the show this week Firefly, want a competition to see who get's mentioned first? _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

I wonder if Richard is in the frame as a replacement for Terry Wogan when Terry decides to eventually retire-maybe early 2007 |

No!! As Terry all being well he wont be going anywhere before 2008, when Radio2 celebrates 40 years on air?

I don't think Terry will go on for much longer. Richard would make a great replacement -indeed in wage terms the BBC would make a great saving by employing him over the longer term.
With the government squeezing the BBC's spending power perhaps they will be forced to look at the talent already on their books.
Richard Allinson rocks. |

And just how long will Terry Wogan keep going for.
Nothing against the fella but he is getting on in years is he not.
Here's hoping "youth gets a chance" on this station much more in the future starting right now in 2007. |

There is very little, if anything to dislike about Richard. He has a fab speaking voice, he's witty, doesn't bore you to death with the ramblings of a mad muso, i.e., 'Listen to me everyone! I know loads about music and stuff' and he doesn't yabber in between tunes. Basically he gets on with the job - which is what I like.
It's just a pity that Allinson and many other hosts <choose your fav> are replaced or over-looked by BBC management, so that they can employ the latest media darling - the new 'Broacasting genius of their generation' - who is usually someone who has never worked within radio broadcasting before and therefore, relies heavily on production staff to get them through - and my god doesn't it show? _________________ Eternal nothingness is fine if you happen to be dressed for it. |

He's always using the same old time filling format of reading out lots of surveys and trivia, getting listeners to text / e-mail and just reading it out. Sadly too many presenters think this format is interesting, but it'simply dull and boring. |
