This series starts tonight with Great Expectations. It sounds like a promising series so I hope it's good.

It took me a while to get used to the presenter's voice in this ..it didn't seem to fit.
Interesting to find out there was an alternative ending to this wonderful book - it worked for me the way it was finally published as I felt it was working up to that all the way through the book. |

I forgot this programme was on Becky, so missed the start. I thought it was ineresting and entertaining. I sort of agree about the presenter - there was absolutely nothing wrong with the presentation - it was more that I thought that his voice and appearance didn't "match". "Great Expectations" was one of the set books for my "O" level and I thought that we had studied it in depth but this prgramme showed how superficial our studies were! |

I found the Mrs Dalloway episode of this series so interesting (a lot of that was down to the presenter) it sent me in search of more information about Virginia Woolf. I did know of her before but not in any great detail. As the presenter said in this programme most people know that she killed herself and that fact rather overshadows other things.
I found this half hour long documentary about her on Youtube which was very interesting.

(I wasn't as keen on the Shakespeare one)
The Hours is on ITV 3 tonight at 10
Nicole Kidman won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in it
The plot focuses on three women of different generations whose lives are interconnected by the novel Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. These are Clarissa Vaughan (Streep), a New Yorker preparing an award party for her AIDS-stricken long-time friend and poet, Richard (Harris) in 2001; Laura Brown (Moore), a pregnant 1950s California housewife with a young boy and an unhappy marriage; and Virginia Woolf (Kidman) herself in 1920s England, who is struggling with depression and mental illness whilst trying to write her novel. |

I read Mrs Dalloway fairly recently - my first venture into Virginia Woolf's works so I was looking forward to this programme. I thought it was excellent, I liked the presenter and felt it could easily have filled a one hour slot.
It has whetted my appetite for reading more of VW's books. Becky, I will have a look at the documentary - thanks for that. |

Just watched the Great Expectations one and wasn't impressed. Didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, and was all a bit shallow.
Shall give the Mrs Dalloway one a go though. Perhaps I'll enjoy it better when it's a book I haven't read. |
