This is not the John Wilson Orchestra, one of the BBC's , but he is conducting so thought I'd post a heads up.
Shame there isn't the usual one from John this year.

I watched it Helen and mostly enjoyed it. I noticed that JW had imported two players from his regular orchestra i.e. drummer Matt Skelton and saxophonist Howard McGill.
I too would like to have seen a Prom with his own orchestra but I expect he will do that next year. I guess he had to recognise the Bernstein centenary this time. |

I think this was the first one of John Wilson's Proms that I didn't enjoy. I recorded it but stopped watching not that far into it. I'm hoping the concert in December will be better!
Back to the Proms I did enjoy the young saxophonist Jess Gilham with her performance on Saturday. I'd never heard her before but I thought she was amazing.

A couple of his Proms are to be repeated:
24 July on Radio 3: "Hollywood Rhapsody Prom"
26 July on TV: "The Sounds of Broadway"
Greatly looking forward to both. |

Oh that is fantastic news Eileen! Thanks for posting.
I was speaking to a friend last week who has been to many proms (her dad was with the St John Ambulance and they got complimentary tickets each time they were on duty) and we were wondering what was going to happen this year.

I was all set to record tonight's Prom then realised I already have it (twice!) from previous transmissions. They seem to be different lengths though so I must compare them and delete one version.
I wish they were going to repeat the MGM or the Gershwin one. Maybe one day ... |

I have a sound only recording from Radio 3 but no video, so have set it to record.
I would have liked the Hooray for Hollywood one from I think 2011 but I think I still have a DVD of it. I now have some software that can record video from anywhere, including iPlayer, so would have loved to have made a better quality recording. _________________ 88 - 91 FM this is Radio 2 from the BBC!

Well this Prom was even better 2nd time around for me and I'm so glad I recorded it! I missed the 'live' start but will watch from recording.
I was feeling a bit fed up over the weekend and this was just what I needed. I wish they would show some of the other ones again.
There were fantastic reviews on Twitter from @JWOrchestrafans

Eileen the West Side Story balcony scene was omitted from last night's broadcast. Apparently it was not on the original TV broadcast but on one shown later. Something to do with TV rights. That will probably explain your different recording lengths!

Helen, thanks for the info about the West Side Story scene. How interesting! I wonder why I recorded the repeat transmission when I already had the original? What a lucky thing to do. I have run through the longer version and enjoyed the WSS bit so that is the one I shall keep. Thanks again.
How odd that it was not on the original in September 2012 but was on the Boxing Day repeat. I'd have thought it would have been the other way round. |

I got the info from a post on Twitter yesterday Eileen otherwise I wouldn't have known. Apparently when the Prom went out on TV originally the BBC didn't have the TV rights for that scene/or song but gained it shortly afterwards. It must have been one that didn't go out live so the recording was of the whole performance and it went out again in Dec that same year, in total that time. Not sure why they used the shortened version unless they wanted to show what was shown during the Prom season........
I don't post much on Twitter but follow @JWOrchestraFans and a few other people. I was grateful a few years back as they gave a heads up that the tour tickets were going on sale the following day, so it does have its uses!

A bit late to watch live, but there is always iPlayer and catch up!
It was Hollywood Rhapsody from 2013. I haven't watched as yet though.
