A reminder that it's the John Wilson Oklahoma prom this Friday night on BBC4 from 8pm and on Radio 3 at 7.30.
I saw an amateur production of Oklahoma as a child and have always loved the songs ever since. I've also memories of driving across the Red River (it is red!) that forms the state line between Texas and Oklahoma a few years ago. Of course we sang 'Oklahoma' as we crossed the bridge.......

Yes, Helen, I have been looking forward to that for a while. The film soundtrack is the first LP I ever bought. |

Any good? I saw a few minutes near the end, which was "acting" as opposed to a song. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

I thought it was just fantastic. There were some outstanding performances notably IMO Jud Fry and Ado Annie. I wasn't taken with Scarlett Strallen as Laurey as I thought her voice was a bit too warbley. There was some terrific dancing and all done in such a limited space. The three hours flew by |

There is a good story about the addition of the exclamation mark in the title. Helene Hanff, who was the American half of the 84 Charing Cross Road letter-writing, worked as a youngster for the Theatre Guild which first put on the show. The exclamation mark was added at the last minute but after all the press releases had been printed so she and a colleague spent time long into the night inking it in on thousands of them. She tells that in her autobiography.
