I see that this topic has raised its head again. This time Chief Constables are talking of introducing quotas for the recruitment of officers of ethnic minority, to increase their numbers from about 3% to about 7% of the whole.
I can see no reason why recruitment amongst ethnic minority groups shouldn't be encouraged but am utterly against quotas. Surely the only criterion should be to appoint the best person for the job.
Comments?

I agree, Ian. I think that the police service and other public bodies will eventually reflect the ethnic mix that we have in this country, but it will take time, and positive discrimination is not the way to bring that mix quickly as it would create more problems than it would solve. _________________ Geddon

I'm against quotas, they shouldn't be needed. If all races are equal (under equal opportunities) then it shouldn't matter what race / religion a policeman etc is.
I see the same thing is being used to find the right balance of minority tourists for the Lake District etc |

There already is a cheesy DJ quota on Radio 2. One of Tim Smith, Mo Duuta or Pete Mitchell must appear each weekend or Bank Holiday BY LAW. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |
