Some councils in the UK now collect rubbish fortnightly rather than every week - how does that compare to other European countries?

Also landfill sites in the UK could be all filled in 10 years.

Same problems in Athens:

Most country places have big communal waste bins which are emptied frequently. Just take your garbage for a stroll.

We regularly visit southern Spain, and our villa gets a refuse bin collection every morning of the week.... at 3.00am!

We just put our rubbish into a communial bin (there is about one per small street). There are lots of opportunities to recycle as well - bottles, green waste, paper. I cannot see what the problem is. Of course, people should create less waste to begin with, something that many people find impossible to do is this stupid society we live in where everything is a problem for others to sort out not ourselves.

A letter from someone the other day also said that in Majorca rubbish was collected twice or three times a week, and the bins cleaned at the same time.

Most councils appear to be adopting fortnightly collections - picking up recyclable ("green") rubbish one week and the rest ("black") the next. Since the rubbish in this household is 50:50 and we securely wrap food rubbish I have no trouble with that.
