An urgent inquiry is to be carried out into engineering work delays which have caused chaos for thousands of people.

The Office of Rail Regulation began the inquiry after West Coast Mainline work overran by two days. Disruption was set to continue on Thursday.

It does take time to upgrade track, signaling, take away a signal box, etc etc.. People don't understand that they have too test it all, and health and safety have to check and check it over. I know it's frustrating. One thing I would say they could have put the fares on hold until at least the end of January. It's greedy management and shareholders.

If the cost of petrol for cars has gone up by 10-20% this year, which it has, but rail fares are only up 5-10%, then surely train users are getting better value.

Why should anyone be surprised about overrunning engineering works? It happens time after time.

And what is the use of fining those responsible? They'll get the money back from the long-suffering public by some means or other.

Ian.
