Bring back Richard Allinson-at least he's a proper professional presenter in this slot.

Very good, I agree ... but if everyone on R2 sounded like Richard Allinson...

This is 2008. Much as I'd like to see Gerald Harper and Michael Aspel return to R2...

First time I've heard Mr. Baker... I'm not wowed by him but he's ok and will probably grow on me.. at least he doesn't sound like the loudmouth I pictured him to be years ago.

My opinion of Zoe Ball remains the same however.. Rolling Eyes
Why do they think it's necessary for two of them to do this show? I can't help but feel Baker would be better on his own... Razz

Yeah, Zoe's ok, but doesn't quite know when to belt up. Dan's BBC London co-hosts are much better at holding back when necessary.

Sorry Milady but this is dull and worse, lazy. Falling back far too much on the old cliche of getting Joe Public getting to do the work for you. I couldn't care less about somebody knocking over a piece of furniture. Dull, dull, dull. Far too much pointless wittering

On the plus side some of the music isn't too bad but it's all over the shop. It's as though the two of them were presenting too different shows.

I imagine the BBC set this up in case yesterday's meeting went badly for Ross. Now it looks as though he'll be back

What, like the Breakfast Show and its 8 million listeners does you mean?

Baker's not for everyone I know that. But he puts effort in where others just put their feet up and read the paper on air. Where else you gonna hear Belle of the Ball, Daffy Duck sings 'Yesterday' and Elephant Man impressions?

Ah, good for you Minx. I think people need to give him more than one show before passing sentance. Older, more mature listeners will perhaps then make more connections with things like his love of Wilde, Woodhouse, show tunes, old school showbiz and the like.

And then there's Erin Bode! Hope he plays 'Sidney Come Down' next week. A treat.

NB: A thought. I'm always reminded of Derek Jameson (!!) who was blasted when he took over breakfast - yes breakfast! How nuts! 'Cor blimey! Do they mean me?' and all that - but in the end in 1991 had attracted upwards of 6 million listeners. I think Baker on R2 would be a similar slow burner - but people do get used to things over time.

Different Every Time and all that...

Otherwise, there's always Smooth Radio!!

I really can't understand the fascination with Danny Baker by certain people on this forum.

I mean, he's ok but not much more that - in a Richard Allinson sort of way - and definitely not worthy of the praise heaped upon him.

Radio 2 should really be above this sort of "our text and email subject for the day" method of programming, and today was just the worst case example. Zoe Ball was just chipping in inviting listeners to text and email their experiences of the last thing she said. She was bad enough in her Radio 1 days and sadly hasn't improved. Completely unable to read a piece of paper in front of her eyes without getting the punctuation right and changing or confusing the whole meaning.

I did wonder how long it would be before she mentioned her dad. 2 minutes - I wasn't disappointed.

If they've had long enough to script a trailer which has already become tiresome then they've had long enough to script a decent show. Evidently they couldn't manage it.

I sincerely hope they improve over the next 3 weeks. I tried as hard as I could to put aside my feelings of "contempt" for these two and give the show a listen but it was bloody hard work. I never thought I'd say this but Allinson, as average as he is, would have been better than this.

I honestly think that JR will find it hard to return to this slot. His whole approach to the show was being risque and different. He'll have to watch every word he says now and I doubt whether the show will have the same appeal.

Sorry Lady Boil De Spudswell, what absolute rubbish. Too much yacking, not enough music. Next week I'll find a nice pot of paint, take the lid off and watch it dry. Now there's exciting compared to these two. Failing that I'll look for an extra shift at work!

Can we please, please have Richard Allinson back?

... compared to the curmudgeonly belly-achings of Mark Lamarr in this slot, I think Baker's jolly whimsy is a vast improvement.

I like Allinson too. I'm funny like that. I can appreciate very different broadcasters, unlike some around here.

Common ground there, Milady. I don't like Lamarr in that slot either.

Just as our resident Bakerophile, how similar was that to his afternoon show?

Like Minx, I'll give it another go for the same reason that I've only ever eatan two Big Macs in my entire life; namely to see if the first was an abberation or no, that's as good as it gets.

Aye, good for you for giving it a chance. In terms of similarity to the afternoon show I think that works a little better in so much as it's very much his show, with co-hosts chipping in as necessary.

Because the R2 show is billed as a double-header there's a little less what I would call control and so consequently you end up with two people vying to speak - talking over each other etc.

Ross has an unknown and uncredited 'foil' in Andy Davies and if I'm to be honest I think Baker would work a lot better on R2 with his deputies from BBC London who know their place - when to speak - when not to - and it just seems to make for a more fluid, less blathery show which I think can make all the difference to ones perception of it. You may not like Ross's show, but I think it'd sound a lot worse with a 'name' co-hosting and fighting for airtime.

At the end of the day you either like what Danny's doing or you don't, but I applaud anyone who will reserve conclusive opinion until the end of this 4 week run. Even then, it's perhaps not really long enough to get used to a show and for the hosts to settle into it.

I leave you with one gem. On the other show Baker was building a person from the body parts of people's names - Jimmy Nail etc. - then one listener told of a newpaper headline about Michael Foot and his new position in weopens control. The headline read - bearing in mind we're building a person here - "Foot Heads Arms Body" Superb!

I've always liked DB as he seems to ferret out or entice people to write/phone/e-mail/text him with the completely absurd stories that never fail to amuse me - at least when he was on 6-0-6 years ago. Two that spring to mind were "the cheapest amount you ever paid to enter a football ground" (an orange at Bolton or somewhere similar, since that was all the chap had on him, and he was let in), and "strange events at the turnstiles" (a caller found an empty turnstile at the old Man City ground, sat behind the counter and people thought he was for real - he made a fortune that day!).

Sticking Zoe Ball in the same studio was a mistake - it doesn't need to be a double-header and frankly, they just got in each other's way for the 40 odd minutes I listened this morning. I gave up in frustration, since I got annoyed every time la Ball opened her mouth. Pity.

I wasn't able to give this show my full attention this morning but I do hope to use listen again at some point this week. The glimpses I did hear, I did actually quite enjoy. Birthday Polka (or was it Poker?) seemed like a cleverly obscure creation for the new competition-deprived BBC from a man that seems to be described best as a lateral thinker - and it's lateral thinking that entertains me. I can see him settling into Radio 2 if he's given a chance.

I tuned in, fully prepared to hate it (never been much of a DB fan, but haven't heard him for some years) and was pleasantly surprised. You can hear the similarities between DB and the Jonathan Ross of old (before JR became lazy and totally fixated on smut). But then DB was JR's main writer once upon a time, wasn't he? Baker turns to whimsy where Ross resorts to (talking about) masturbation. Far more creative.

It struck me as the kind of show that could live quite comfortably in this slot.

Exactly the post I was hoping to see; Someone who was fully prepared to hate, perhaps based on a dated opinion of the man, but actually found something intelligent there - albeit a bit nutty and whimsical - but then Terry's been doing that for years!

I think you're right. Dan strives to come up with imaginative content whereas dear old JR, Brand etc, often resort to below the waist humour to fill the links.

This was though by no means his best show or Dan on top form. There is still some ironing out to do - not least where co-hosting is concerned. Dan doesn't need a name vying for airtime and creating quite a noisy and chaotic sound. He just needs a feed along the lines of the brilliant David Kuo who he has on the London show. He knows when to speak, and when he does it is pure spun gold. Also this was the first time Dan had used the desk and as he said it was the reverse to the ones he was used to. When he's mastered the equipment, he can be technically quite impressive the way he blends in appropriate sound effects, pieces of music etc.

This show needs a few tweaks and to be given a bit of time to settle and breathe. It still won't be for everyone even then, but in terms of fresh, creative interactive radio it will go some way in entertaining a good many of us who like something a little more unpredictable between the tunes.

I'm Baker agnostic but any new show will be unlikely to be great from Day 1. Has it been confirmed whether he is covering the full period up to D Day when Ross storms the beaches again?

Doing 4 weeks up to around Xmas. Guess post Xmas too maybe up till Ross's return? ... (If he doesn't now quit for ITV/C4 coz he can't sue for unfair dismissal coz the beeb decided not to fire him after all! Think it'll be really hard for him to return to R2 given many there blame him and Brand for Lesley's abdication.)

It's Sunday evening and I'm pleasantly surprising myself by listening to Danny Baker on 'Listen Again'. I like his style. Warm, charming but slightly inhuman observations and casual dollops of interesting musical trivia that would make Allinson blush (I love that I now know what the longest note in pop is and which squeeze song starts 'all of a sudden').... One hour in and quite impressed. Shamed about that woman - leave her at home next time, Danny.

I only heard about 20 minutes but liked it. While it is a shame about Zoe (why does Radio 2 team up the interesting blokes with overbearing women?) I thought it was a great example of a radio person interacting with the audience. A massive contrast to the slot's usual incumbent.

Well done Ian! It's not for everyone, I know that - but then neither I suppose is The Organist Entertains?!

What I would say, for any older, more discerning listeners doubtful of Baker's intelligence or maturity - here is a show that opens with Leroy Anderson's majestic 'Belle of the Ball' as its signature tune - wanted charlie.chester as its honorary e-mail address and began with a Viv Stanshell quote from Sir Henry at Rawlinson End. Persevere and, compared to some of the teenage arrivistes who haven't lived that R2 sign, you may MAY find Baker not so bad after all.

(Agree Ian, a shame about Zoe Ball! Not needed. Adds nothing and just gets in the way of Baker's flow. His BBC London co-hosts work much better. They're not 'names' and so consequently there's less ego and less of an urge for them to keep butting in unnecessarily!)

Agree totally about ZB - superfluous, making up the numbers (why?) and really just irritating - no change there then. Why did they need a co-presenter?
Can't say I heard enough of DB to formulate a definite yes or no standpoint - let's just say he's a vast improvement on the man whose name Sarah K can't even bring herself to say. But that is damning with faint praise, and I would give him another listen. I'm just thrilled for Lady B as I know what this means!
