No, it's not the DAB service... I checked straight away if my Roberts unit worked and it does. ( I get a strong DAB signal here on the Norfolk coast by the way.. it really is much better than FM imo )

DAB decoding can vary from device to device irrespective of the incoming signal stream. You can place two different DAB devices side by side and it's possible that they'll behave differently.

Sure enough, my Teac hi fi unit's warranty expired in May 2010.. typical!
But - I just rang Bennetts and mentioned that although the warranty had expired, I'd heard mention of the "fit for purpose" argument.. they had me on hold for a minute or so before suggesting I bring it in for them to look at... free of charge of course. Razz

Colin.. for the second time, I've received an on screen message on my laptop which reads..

"Windows has detected an IP address conflict..
Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your Network Administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System Event Log."

We have three wireless pcs switched on for most of the time so I don't think it can be my other pcs causing this message..
Should I be concerned do you think?

Hi Colin,

Don't know if this is similar to SF's but Saturday had a balloon message come up to say:-

Windows - System Error address conflicts with another system on the network.

I googled it and it was something about a different IP address. It seemed okay so I left it. Earlier that day I had rebooted the router as the internet radio was playing up. It came back but later there was a drop off so I assume that maybe that was the cause of the message?

The next day I had internet problems with the same machine, a laptop but hardwired to the router, I rebooted and it seems okay.

Do you think it's solved itself or is it something that needs looking at?

SantaFe/Helen

Which version of Windows are you each using? If it's Vista, then I'm not surprised (Vista is appalling) but there's a known problem in the way that it acquires a network address - the network IP address that's allocated in sequence by the router's software - and it looks like it's not issuing the Ip addresses correctly, hence the apparent conflict.

You're not using LinkSys routers are you by any chance? If so, there are definitely known issues with them and Vista which are usually sorted out with appropriate updates.

Have a look at this (if you can fathom out what the heck Microsoft is waffling on about - their tech docs aren't exactly user-friendly in much the same way that you're recommended to speak to your "system administrator" for advice. Yeah right! We all have one of those handy!).

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948363

I should add that I'm much less of a Microsoft user than I use to be now, having switched almost everything I do to trouble-free Apple Macs, though we still have three Windows PCs in the house - my XP laptop, my wife's Windows 7 netbook and a soon-to-be-upgraded XP-to-Windows 7 machine, too.

Either way, i don't think each of you have major issues - just make sure you have the latest updates installed for whichever Windows you have installed.

Thanks Colin.. the first time I got the pop up message, I just ignored it and things still seem to operate ok-ish.
I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, Home Basic on the laptop and XP on the least used machine.
The Router is a "NetGear" unit and was supplied by Virgin Media..

Thanks Colin,

I'm on XP and it's a 4 year old router, PN version. I've got all the updates so hopefully it was a one off.

Most likely. My wife gets paranoid about silly Windows messages popping up and asks me what to do. I just tell her to give them a slap!

I'm getting rid of Windows XP on my 4-year-old laptop and installing Ubuntu Linux instead. Much better!

It wouldn't have concerned me as much had I not had a loss of the internet (hardwired) on the same machine on Sunday. Everything else was fine, including the internet radio!

Mrs SFF has just returned from a few days in Germany.. Dusseldorf area I think it was.
To her surprise, she was quite impressed! everything she saw there was very clean, well presented and the people she encountered at the venue, restaurants, car hire etc.. could all speak good English. The various meals she had in the restaurants were excellent and very reasonably priced too.

But one thing puzzles me, she said the three or four restaurants she visited all allowed dogs to accompany their owners! Shocked

I think that is not uncommon in some parts of Europe
Of course they could have been guide dogs which are allowed in such places in Britain
The main question for me is do they allow cool cats in there!

No they weren't guide dogs, just plain dogs.
I find that strange.. I'm a dog lover but even I wouldn't expect people to tolerate my Newfie laying by my table in a restaurant.
Don't know about moggies.. I have to say I'm not a fan of cats! wouldn't hurt them of course and I just recently lost my old git after 20+ years..
but can't tolerate their murdering tendencies towards birds.
I have a soft spot for birds... Razz

Point taken Santa
I was attacked by a parrot when I was 5 years old and have had a phobia of birds ever since
Probably that's why I am a confirmed cat lover
I also still have the scar to prove it
I do like a nice turkey at Christmas though

Like Turkey?
Damn... so do I.. Laughing

Cats are ok, and I have to admit when it comes to the funniest videos on "You've been framed" or something, cats win hands errr, paws down!
but of the cats we've had, I have to say I think they are quite selfish creatures in the main.
Ours only lowered itself to show affection when it wanted food! after that it was back to sleep.
There's one moggy in particular which winds me up here.. I've chased it off our property so many times, our Newf has chased it, I've "got it" with water several times and still it parades all over our place here.. no fear what-so-ever! I'm sure if it had fingers it would raise two of them at me every time.
It chewed up another Pigeon yesterday just for the hell of it Sad

Now a Newfie... well, now you're talking! Laughing

Santa as well as 5 cats and 2 kittens I have had a greyhound for many years now
I rescued her from some problem people and she is still very temperamental but she loves cats
She has been known to attack birds other dogs badgers and occasionally she nips humans she does'nt like but she will never cause harm to a cat
They even sleep with her in her basket and once when one of the cats was cornered in the garden by 2 terriers she shot out in about 2 seconds and bit both terriers in the neck and I've never seen them since
People would probably think the last type of dog you would want in a house full of cats would be a greyhound but my dog loves them and would defend them to the death I think

I find it surprising your Greyhound would attack birds... although having said that, our Newf will plonk around our car park in a pathetic attempt to catch the Pigeons I feed now and then.. it's more likely to be the mischievous puppy in her though.
Yes, and idyllic picture of your Greyhound surrounded by snoozing cats.. quite nice I would think. Our Newf did tolerate our cat too but maybe sensed that she was geriatric... in fact I think she pined after she pegged out.

Yes I remember Jeremy Vine did a feature about how animals just like humans can mourn the loss of a fellow being
He had an animal psychologist who had conducted research on the subject and from what she said I am sure it does happen
It's quite well known for dogs to pine when their owners die and certainly my cats have reacted in the past when other cats have died
I think most animals are a lot more intelligent than some humans think

Bugger..
Whilst on holiday in the US recently, I treated myself to a special edition DVD of "Forbidden Planet" with an additional disc featuring deleted scenes, 2 additional films starring Robby the Robot, 3 documentaries, excerpts from the MGM Parade TV series and.. a science fiction movie trailer gallery. Razz
I've been saving it to watch when I really feel like it and as the dreaded Holby City is on I thought this would be the night.
Stuck it in the player and got an on screen message "Disc may not play in your region"... Shocked
Hurrying downstairs, I tried it in another machine and got the same message... Crying or Very sad
Just before it became a Frisbee crashing through the window, I tried it in my pc and it works! I hate the thought of watching both discs on the pc but it would seem I have no choice.. unless...

Colin! Laughing if I copy the disc on my pc will it change the format automatically or just reproduce the same region code?
The region code is 1 but I was under the impression modern DVDs would play this... Confused

How did I get dragged into this???? Cool

Well, the DVD is Region 1 as you've identified, which it's geared for North America, etc. (Europe being Region 2). The region coding is actually embedded into the code that runs the disc and if the playback device doesn't agree that it's allowed to play it back then it won't, quite simply.

DVD players that are sold in Region 2 (geographically speaking) won't play anything other than Region 2 discs, so you won't have any success there. This is so because of the different licensing agreements that persist around the world.

Copying the contents of the DVD to your PC won't change anything because the coding is embedded (it's effectively DRM - Digital Rights Management like you get with downloaded files from the iTunes store). However, if you use the right software (if you get my drift) then you can "rip" the DVD to your PC and strip the region coding as you do. You can burn it back to a blank DVD for playing in any device.

If you search for "free dvd ripper software" in google you'll see one at the top of the list which (allegedly) works OK.

However, one should be mindful that to do so is a teensy-weensy bit unlawful. Just thought I'd mention it otherwise I'll get moaned at. (Personally, I don't see the difference between ripping DVDs for personal use and ripping CD audio tracks into iTunes, but hey).

Thanks Colin... I'll give it a try tomorrow. I was under the impression that most DVD players were "multi region" but maybe I'm thinking of CD players! on the other hand, I know I've bought DVDs from the US before and they've worked fine... maybe it's the DVD disc that's multi region..

By the way, I returned my faulty Teac DAB tuner/CD unit to Bennett's and got the expected "Well, it is out of guarantee sir" response. I quickly retaliated with the "fit for purpose" patter which caused the young salesman to "have a word with my Manager"
They offered to have a look at it and, depending on the cost of repairs, they would negotiate a contribution.

A week or so later, they called me to say the unit was unrepairable Rolling Eyes but they were so impressed with the condition I'd kept it in plus, it was packed up exactly as it was supplied in the original wrappings, they've offered a complete refund of £147.50.. the full cost of the unit to me.
Mind you, although I was pleased about the refund, I am disappointed not to get it back as it was a nice system.
I was tempted to ask if I could buy it back as scrap as it worked fine on FM and CD but I don't think they'd swallow that.

Yes, it's the disc that contains the coding data not the player, with DVD players being programmed to read the coding data and then decide whether it can be played in that particular territory. It's mostly commercial feature films etc that are region-coded with many DVDs not region-coded at all. It's all down to the protective nature of the major Hollywood studios.

Just venting off somewhat, today has been one of those days when we just want to go to bed early and forget all about it... get it out of the way.

Social Services... what a pathetic bunch they are.. couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery half of them.. they really couldn't.

We had a lady come to us in June and to keep it simple, she was borderline classification for us as a residential home, but the powers that be wanted her to stay at a home like ours despite her light mental health problems. Our residents would be a good stimulus for her, together with her 4 visits per week to a Day Centre to help occupy her mind.
This was June... so far, we haven't received a penny in fees from Social Services, despite countless telephone calls and promises, not a penny.

Yesterday, Social Services informed us that she would be moving to a Mental Health facility in Norwich.. reason? they will no longer pay for her Day Centre attendance due to cut backs.
Outcome... Social Services will now pay out an extra £400 per week ( that's a lot more than our fee in the first place ) instead of the £180 per week for her Day Centre visits...

On top of that, they will not pay us one month's notice as stated in our contract.. thanks to a little clause in their contract.

So here's a lady, perfectly content and settled, being uprooted again due to cut backs.. a week or so before Christmas... she's helped with the decorations and was looking forward to the big day here.

It makes me sick. Social Services can't sort out a payment in six months yet they can organise a transfer in one week because of cut backs... and what a "cut back" this is! paying out an extra £220 so they can close the Day Centre? it stinks.

and whilst I'm on my soapbox... this stinks too.. lately, I've had the feeling this country is screwed.. just one cock up after another!
Rash, illogical decisions being made and re-made, shake ups, reviews, overhauls.. but the bottom line is, do we, or more importantly, the people we've elected, really know what we're doing anymore?

I find this unbelievable.. in my town, "they" have just spent millions of pounds on building an outer harbour.. very impressive. last year, there was a lot of celebration in the local press about two huge cranes bought new ( from someplace other than the UK of course ) to handle the upcoming container business.
Now we learn they are to be dismantled and sold off.. never lifted a container! To make matters worse, large sections of roads were strengthened to handle the proposed heavy traffic... now all for nothing.
I read Norfolk County Council and our local council had coughed up £18 million towards the cost of this fiasco..

Great Yarmouth used to be a very busy port, fishing boats by the hundreds would squeeze in through the harbour, wood yards all the way along the vast waterfront, ship builders, shipping supply merchants, engineering works, riverside rail links...
Our forebears must be laughing at us..

and yesterday I heard the Air Sea Rescue service is going to be sold off to foreigners.. I don't know how politicians can sleep at night.

Santa, I think the problem is not that "we" don't know what we're doing, the problem lies with younger, career politicians who have had no experience of the real world outside politics. It's "them" that doesn't have the first idea what they're really doing. They're stupid, that's why.

Look at the "top 3" - Cameron, Clegg, Miliband. They've each come up through the ranks of their respective political parties having worked as researchers, PPS, etc., "advisors", junior ministers, etc., straight from University and not one of them has ever done a real job out here in the real world.

So it's reasonable to assume that they haven't a clue what they're actually doing or have any real idea what the impact on ordinary people will be of their drastic policies.

We're all in this together? Not me. The Big Society? Yeah right!

It does indeed SantaFefan. I doubt this unworthy government knows what they or we're doing, then I don't think Shameron, oily Osborne and the majority of their cronies have ever experienced life in the real world (the one we inhabit) Or had a proper job. I know I've said this somewhere else on here, but I still think that the last time any of them got their hands dirty was the last time they fell over on the playing fields of Eton on a rainy day! I shouldn't think they even know any ordinary people! Just how can they & Clogg do what they have done with student fees then wonder why students take to the streets. No I'm not excusing the criminal acts of vandalism that those who hijacked (I believe that's what happened) comitted, especially the damage to the car Prince Charles & co were in as they didn't have anything to do with it.
And I think someone should remind Shameron, his human shield Clogg & the rest of them that it was their rich banking friends who caused this recession. But I suspect they wouldn't want to hear that!

I don’t think the problem is necessarily with the politicians- although they do have little knowledge of the real world. Often it’s the case that department budget holders find it easier to offload “customers” who are a burden on their budget than it is for them to find genuine savings within their departments. They look after themselves before they care one jot about “the Customer” Santa’s lady is a classic case. The Social Services have decided to offload this lady from their budget onto the NHS budget. That isn’t the Government’s fault; it’s the lazy self-serving Social Services Managers who are at fault- they’ve just used her mild mental health problem to exclude her from their budget. No doubt they’ll be off on a team building course with their department future direction focus group this weekend. It makes me mad!

Not all politicians, of course. My MP (Mark Lancaster) has done two tours of duty with the TA in Afghanistan as a bomb disposal expert - and lived to tell the tales!

Lots of politicians just get on with the job as best they can - not just at Westminster but also in local government - it's just that those who lead seem to be the least connected with the rest of us.

Can you believe this? Evil or Very Mad
Last June-ish, our commercial MayTag washer/dryer packed up.. umpteen hundred quid for another one.
Sod this, I thought.. buy a couple of standard domestic washing machines and dryers and run 'em to death and replace.. much cheaper.
Selected a couple of Candy units from Comet and during the conversation it was mentioned that we could have "Corporate Insurance" for £179.. for commercial use.
Great!

Back in December, one unit packed up.. a call to the service people quickly followed.
I was aghast to hear " Although you have commercial breakdown cover, the machine cannot be used for commercial purposes!" Shocked " The machine can be sited within commercial premises but not used"

It would be nice to be able to turn the clock back to better and more sensible times

That reminds me I'd much prefer to live in France then I don't have to turn the clock back Very Happy

Santa - sounds to me like you were mislead when considering the policy. Was that clearly pointed out to you at the time?

It really all comes down to what is in the small print

It's very difficult to argue these types of cases and it's a bit like people taking out redundancy or health insurance when they are self employed and there are so many loopholes it makes a mockery of the policy

It might be worth threatening some kind of publicity if there is the facility to do so or alternatively you could go down the road of constantly writing to the company until it becomes so expensive for them they decide it's cheaper just to refund the money

I won an argument with a CC company last year (plus a refund of premiums with 8pc compound interest for exactly that reason. I argued that the small print was too small on that particular point and therefore I was the victim of mis-selling. When I threatened to take it to the FOS they gave in ans settled up by making a "goodwill payment".

That's why I think Santa may have a case.

Yes Colin, that happens quite often

They take the view it is cheaper to cough up than incur the cost involved in arguing and of course they always have the reassurance of knowing that the vast majority of the poor sods they call their customers are very unlikely to do anything other than moan

By the way, Martin Lewis's website and forums at http://www.moneysavingexpert.com is a great source of info and guidance on all this stuff. They must hate him!
