The BBC's Religion and Ethics Department isn't an obvious area for Francis Urquhart-style skullduggery, but consider the following:
1. In 2006 its previous Head (an agnostic but in my view a man who did a good job and fought his corner) moved elsewhere.
2. His replacement was Mr Michael Wakelin, a Methodist Local Preacher but a man who's come to be very well regarded by those of all Christian or non-Christian religions or of no faith at all. He's been with the BBC for over 20 years.
3. Mr Wakelin is now informed that his post will disappear and give way to a new post of Commissioning Editor and Head of Production Religion and Ethics and that he will be obliged to apply for the post.
4. Mr Wakelin is not appointed to the post and is left thinking about what he wants to do next.
5. No appointment is made to the post and when it's readvertised it will be opened up to further internal as well as external applications, saith the BBC.
Michael Dobbs would give his eye-teeth for such a scenario. What on earth is going on?

The Corporate Headless Chickens of the BBC Senior Management doing only what they do best - running around like headless chickens in the full gaze of the politicians they so fear? |
