Not sure if anyone is interested based on the threads/messages posted to date etc, but the mighty/fantastic Richard Allinson is taking a 2 week break from his weekend shows.

In his place will be Chris Hawkins-who personally I don't think I have ever heard of him before but maybe someone on R2OK knows different.

Anyhow I won't be tuning in preferring to get some regular sleep for the next 2 weeks.

You mean you listen live every week Mark? Hells teeth I enjoy Richard's shows but wouldn't go that far!

I've heard of Chris Hawkins, can't think from where or how just now though.

Yes Helen-as sad as it may seem I have listened/ have tuned in live to every one of Richard's weekend shows since he returned to Radio 2 in a permanent capacity.

My wife is very tolerant and accepts my broken sleep patterns at the weekends-sleeping in the daytime to make up for being awake in the dead of night!

Hopefully one day Richard will secure a daytime show which would be preferable to the current situation.

However until that happens I will continue tune in live (and ensure the black coffee supply is easily accessible).

Best Wishes To You-You are the next best Allinson fan on this board to my mind.

Oi... I like him too :p

And as one of Radio 2's younger listeners, I don't mind his 2/3am starts...nice to listen to with a cup of a tea after a night out. Don't manage much over 20 minutes of a listen though.

That sentence makes me sound young to the old, and old to the young... Hmmm.

Nick-Maybe if you switched from cups of tea to coffee or even something stronger your staying power might increase.

I have mastered staying awake for each of the 2 three hour weekend shows but without something to drink like black coffee I would just fall asleep I feel sure.

Now there's a rare admission. Needs an artificial stimulant to keep awake during the Richard Allinson show! Laughing

Thing is with Richard - I think he plays a brilliant choice of music and has a very warm and approachable presenting style...but his current shows don't offer much to keep you listening for a long period.

It's a shame because I found his Saturday afternoon shows far more enticing but there feels like there's a bit of a lack of effort with the current shows - but fair enough, why put in loads of effort for the graveyard slot.

I have listened to it in the light of day on the iplayer and it keeps me going if i'm bobbing about with some household chores...but when it comes to the crunch, it's a background show.

Sorry, Mark. I still hope Richard gets a proper daytime gig though.

Hello Aitch,
Chris Hawkins' usual home is on 6 music where he does the night shift. He has been on Radio 2, usually covering for the night DJs (Janice Long, Alex Lester) Also Mo Dutta at the weekends.

I find it astonishing that somebody as bland as Allinson can generate such extraordinary devotion. Compared to the execrable Evans and Wright, he is superb, but that is damning with faint praise! Why stay up all night when you can listen at any time? Rolling Eyes

You mean Mark you have never heard of Chris Hawkins? He's broadcast on Radio 2 before. He works for 6 Music. Good luck on your catch up of sleep.

I haven't heard of Chris Hawkins, either. There's more to life than listening to radio all day and night!

I didn't say I listen all day and night. He has covered a few shows on two before. What I gather his 6 Music shows are voicetracked?

I'm not really concerned about whether his contributions are pre-recorded or not. I just have never heard of him that's all.

Which means nothing to those who don't watch GMTV. Like me, for instance!

I see Tim Smith is sitting in for Richard on the second weekend of RA's absence.

I have no intention of tuning in.

Your words not mine Rolling Eyes

Presenters such as Johnnie Walker, Gambo, Dermot O'Leary, Emma Forbes, Zoe Ball, Suzi Q, Bob Harris could all do a fine job I'm sure sitting in for RA re his weekend shows.

If it was one of the above I'm sure would definitely tune in.

So the point you are making is what exactly?

I've never heard Tim Smith do a show solo. Is he one of Steve Wright's sidekicks - the one who always laughs at Steve's jokes?

Yes he is.

Mark Occomore is a fan of his I believe-Smith has a show on a local BBC station I believe at the weekends-Radio Berkshire I think..

For the reasons you mention I don't like him-laughing at Steve Wright jokes etc which are not funny.

He strikes me as a real brown nose as far as Steve Wright is concerned.

Rolling Eyes well he wouldn't make a good side kick to Steve if he didn't laugh or criticized everything he said now would he?
Why can't people accept The Big Show's format for what it is - light hearted fun?
I get the feeling he likes working with radio 2''s top dj anyway....
I love the show.. Razz

There's a difference between a person being "a good sidekick" and one who a complete sycophant though.

I like listening to Tim Smith when he's solo. I enjoyed him when he did Weekend Early show over on Radio One years ago. Tim was also used to be on the Roadshows with Wrighty. Yes he used to present on BBC Berkshire. Tim was covering for Alex Lester a few weeks back. Looks like Tim is a big part of the cover work on Two. Get him covering for other people would be good.

I hope Richard's cover days are not over especially when other cover presenters around are "not very good".

I think it's such a pity that RA has to be in the "cover" category given that he's one of R2's best presenters.

That door may have shut? People used to moan he's not got his own show on the station anymore. Now he's got his own show, people moan he's not heard anywhere else. You can't please everyone.
