Listening to Sir Terry the other day (having re-tuned after the CIN excess) I was wondering how much airplay some of Terry's favourites, which also happen to be some of mine, will get on the new show; the likes of Eva Cassidy, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Clifford T. Ward and the many others whose music is rarely heard outside of WUTW.
'Tis often said that we never appreciate anything till we've lost it for good. I fear that may be the case with mornings on R2 as we have known and loved them for many years. |

Hi GG,
I think you're right, we are going to miss more than just hearing Terry's dulcets. Listening this week I've felt really sad as it isn't going to be the same again.
Today I dug out an old Christmas compilation I'd made donkeys years ago, some of my records and other bits I'd recorded and edited from the radio. Amongst the tracks was a Mel Torme recording of the 'Christmas Song' with Wogan wishing us a Merry Christmas at the end. I know it was from his first stint on Breakfast from the dates.
Wish I had a few more of them now!

Mark
It doesn't need to move on. There are presenters and producers who could do it more subtly than the way it will happen. I thihk you've been reading too many of Scott's posts elsewhere.

I agree that we don't appreciate things enough until they have ended.
Ed Stewart has gone, Jimmy Young has gone, Now Terry is going which I find very sad.
Even though I enjoyed WUTW more with Pauly Walters, and getting rid of Fran to replace her with Lynne Bowles was a really bad move, I still really enjoyed the show.
Sadly I seem to be one of the few that enjoys Chris Evans show, so I wish him all the best when he takes over, and he has Terrys blessing which is great |

Yes things can be sad when someone leaves after all this time you have listened to them. I was sad when Radio 1 DJ's were sacked years ago. It's not as if he's gone for good, just from certain peoples lifes and routines.
All I'm saying Radio 2 will move on without Terry Wogan in the mornings. |

With respect Mark, I don't think any of the DJs who were sacked on Radio 1 can be compared Terry Wogan as broadcasters.

Terry is a broadcasting legend, as was JY, and they are very hard to replace. _________________ MiS |

Radio 2 will survive and the world will keep spinning after Wogan leaves the breakfast show this coming Friday.
Indeed his replacement is going to be very good I feel sure. |

I think the official phraseology nowadays is 'strongly disagree' and I certainly do as well. Another current phrase is to 'do my head in', and he certainly would do if I didn't switch him off! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

As so many posters on here are anti Chris Evans, and we clearly know who they are ,as they keep telling us, then lets hope those same posters are not on here airing their views on CE's when he starts his stint as the host of breakfast as quite simply those posters won't be tuning in to him. |

Do you have to be so rude Mark?
I've never listened to Evans' Drivetime apart from a few minutes by mistake and won't listen in the mornings either.
He may be the best ever presenter to some but his voice annoys the hell out of me and life is too short to listen to what I dislike so much.

Not being rude at all.
Just simply saying lets hope the anti Evans brigade are not posting about his breakfast show when he starts in Jan when they are not tuning in etc. |

Mark,
I can assure you I've never posted about the contents of Evans' show as I've never listened to it long enough to do so for the reasons stated in my last post. I won't start now apart to bemoan the fact he is allowed any airtime at all, but in any case it's not up to you to say who is allowed to post what and where.

Did you not read why I don't listen? I can't stand the sound of his voice! It makes me want to throw things at the radio. He hasn't changed as I've unfortunately found on the far too numerous trails for his shows.
So no, I won't give him a chance as I value my sanity too much!

I don't listen to Wogan that much as I don't "linger" long enough to hear him.. but I will miss his voice, relaxed style and sense of humour at that time in the morning. ( not so much that female with the gawky laugh.. strangely, I like the other fellow who talks about buses although I think many on here don't!)
I'll miss some of the music too although I'm not a big fan of those mentioned above.
But like Helen, The chances of me listening to Evans in the morning are zero. I had enough of his mouth when he did the breakfast show on Channel 4.
I certainly won't be missing him on Drivetime as that's the time I do hear an hour or so of radio.
Bad decision I reckon, but good for me... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I'm looking forward to Simon Mayo on Drivetime as well SanteFe. Think it will be R4 for me until Ken starts or maybe just the alarm.

To be fair its difficult to miss as you (and a few others) keep telling us again and again and again and again and again and again....
To be honest I don't bother much with these boards any more as it just seems to be one constant moan about CE.
If thats the biggest problem people have in their lives they're bloody lucky..... |

Erm, Fran was one of three news readers on the "breakfast rota". Yes, the newsreaders used to read the travel into WUTW, but they all lost that duty to Lynne. Fran used to cover about a third of the weeks, with Deadly and John Marsh also taking a third each. When John Marsh retired, he covered about one week in six as a freelance, Charles Nove taking up the slack. When Fran was dropped, John Marsh, Charles Nove and Deadly covered the gap between them.
Fran was NOT replace by Lynne Bowles.

It's because we feel strongly about his taking over from Wogan.
It's also no different from Mark suggesting Richard Allinson sit in for every show when someone's away!

The effect was the same though Helen. The station did indeed move on..... downhill!
As for a replacement; I've started tuning in to "Nation Radio" which is a rock-oriented commercial set-up down here in Wales. Annoyingly, can't get a signal at home but once I get the truck halfway to Swansea (by which time Sarah will be signing off after Christmas) it'll do me till Ken turns up.
Not in the Planet Rock league but far better than the annoying Real Radio and far more listenable than the Ginger Gob! |

It's well known that when CE took over from JW the Drivetime Show lost a lot of listeners - and I mean a lot.
Over the years CE has picked up the listenership again but I would suspect that it's not the original listeners from Drivetime but those who have drifted in from commercial stations who happen to like that sort of shouty radio with pointless phone-ins etc.
Now obviously the R2 bosses are more than happy to steal listeners from commercial radio but how much better would it have been if they could have retained the original listeners as well.
Let's face it, people will listen to whatever they like in the mornings, or indeed, at any time of day. The shouty zoo style isn't good for my morning ears so I won't be tuning in and I've tried listening to other breakfast shows lately to see if I can find an alternative. There really isn't anything better than what CE will be offering - which is a shame.
Surely R2 should strive to be a bit different? Terry's slippers will always be hard to fill but I think in this case the impending feet are just a little too big............which coincidentally matches the ego that they prop up. |

Wogan is now got the freedom of London. I didn't realise he was a comedian.

Paul Donovan in his excellent Sunday Times radio column said Wogan is good with words and language, whereas Evans is good with money... says it all, really.
I'll give Evans a try, then I might post on here (just to warn you!) I doubt he'll have changed much, but let's put a positive spin on this |

I've never liked presenters such as Wright and Evans who talk at you rather than to you. I don't much like clever-dicks either which is why Vine has been such a disappointment to me after his promising start.
Mark, it's got nothing to do with us being miseries. If I wanted shouty, smart-arse "look-at-me-I'm-brilliant" type DJ's I'd tune to Radio 1 or a commercial station. I don't, and it seems I am far from alone; by the look of it you are the one in a minority on this issue. |

Sitting at home recovering from the swine flu, I've had a chance this last week and a bit to realise what I'm going to miss about Terry when he finally gives up this coming Friday. R2 will indeed continue (it's not just a one-man band, after all), but it will seem as though there is something missing.
Whilst I'm not a particular fan of Chris Evans, nor based on past performance will I rush to listen to the new Breakfast Show (hello, R4!), I'm sure there are sections of the licence-paying public who are eagerly awaiting his arrival during the morning shift. Will he last as long in the position and be as popular? Only time will tell, but somehow I don't think so, on either count. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

That is indeed the question. How long before he remembers what it is about breakfast shows that he didn't get on with at his previous two attempts at one?
Well anyway, good to see you back mate and I'm glad you're shaking off the swine flu. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Well im looking forward to Johnnie Walker covering breakfast and when he finishes his little run in early January, I can recommend a decent no shouting in your face alternative, try My Gold Radio, Ericka and James in the morning are pretty good, bit of banter and lots of decent music. They no where near as good as people like Johnnie but are a million times better than Evans. Maybe it would be a good idea to start a thread for all those millions who will be looking for new stations to listen to between 7 and 9.30am come January suggesting good alternatives. |

Briant/LEE - good to be back - haven't been able to listen to R2 much this year for a whole variety of reasons, but I've needed something these last ten days to keep me from going insane!
Might get around to posting some pictures in a few days when I'm back to (what suffices for) normal. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”
