Agree with you Clive, Desmond is great, warm personality with a great affection and knowledge for the music.
I've been recording his shows using Audacity to listen to again in the future. |

Listened to it 'live' tonight for the first time in ages as I listened to Drive so remembered.
He played 'When I'm 64' but didn't hear if there was a connection to Harry James? I think some of the Lennon/McCartney songs were published by Dick James but don't think that would be it, if there was a connection?

Even I listened to him last night, "live", just like H! (I was listening to RA and sheer laziness stopped me turning the radio off/over!)
Not something I'd choose to tune into every week, but it made a nice change to listen to someone who's displaying a keen interest in the music he is playing. I wonder if he is snowed in up in the wilds of Perthshire?

You used to be able to see his back garden when he had the 'Scotcam', but that seems to have been done away with when the site was revamped.

I'm not a great fan of Harry James Orchestra, bit corny, commercial. But I do like the early recordings with Frank Sinatra in 1939.
Desmond played On A Little Street In Singapore which wasn't issued in UK at the time and I'd not heard it before. It doesn't actually sound much like the later Sinatra. Desmond played that track (from Oct 1939), but Frank's first record From The Bottom Of My Heart was made with James in July 1939 and it WAS released in UK, and I have that 78; it's not rare, well it wasn't rare when I found it around 1980 in a junk shop.
I also like Helen Forrest singing and enjoyed Desmond playing I'm Beginning To See The Light.

I'll probably catch it live a lot more often from now on with the change in Drivetime presenter. You just forget to switch the radio back on at 7 after a few weeks and miss so much.

| I usually listen to, and enjoy, this programme every week but last night got sidetracked by Celebrity Mastermind...will go to Listen Again to hear what I missed.......I love Helen Forrest singing It's Been A Long Long Time....not sure who she does it with. |

I remember 'On A Little Street In Singapore' when it was a hit in 1978 for Manhattan Transfer. Does that mean that they were the first to have a hit with that song in the uk?

Thanks for reminder of Manhattan Transfer's recording, just found it on Youtube, thanks LEE.
UK hits? No British band recorded the song in 1939/45. In 1940 the Glenn Miller Orch (with Ray Eberle) was issued in UK on HMV, and the Jimmy Dorsey Orch (with BOB Eberle) recording was issued in UK on Brunswick, maybe not 'hits', though, there weren't charts then here anyway.
Syd Lawrence recorded it but likely just as an album chart.

You're welcome John. I can remember liking 'Man-Tran's' take on it. I've got a feeling that I bought it at that time, though I'll have to check my 45s to see if it's there or not.

I'm pleased to be reminded of Manhattan Transfer... they were great to look at and listen to.
Chanson D'amour was their big hit I believe but "Don't Let Go" was another great song.
I think I'll do some ebaying!

Desmond played one of my favourite pieces of music last night.....the wondrous Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin..last week on Desert Island Discs the celebrated pianist Lang Lang chose this version of it as one of the records he would take to his desert island

Desmond as ever played a nice mix of music. Last night it was tunes from the 1920s, a decade I know very well, but he didn't just stick in that decade for the performances. Many of the artistes featured are rarely if ever heard elsewhere on R2.

That's one of the things I like about Desmond's show. You don't really know what you are going to get next. He does throw in the unexpected from time to time.

Didn't he just. Your comment prompted me to seek out some of his stuff on Grooveshark; if you avoid the execrable "comic" interjections by Windsor Davies, you can really appreciate his gift. For a real treat, check out his version of "All the Things you Are", absolutely beautiful.
Can't help but wonder, had he been an emerging talent in this day and age, what "Britain's Got Talent" could have done for him.
Regrettably, in the 1970's he made a better living as a little fat bloke in shorts, although according to his obituaries he was a trained and talented vocalist. What a tragic waste. |

I remember walking through one of the arcades of the shopping centre in Milton Keynes (now branded "centre:mk") and I could hear familiar tones emanating from somewhere. It turned out to be Don Estelle set up in the window of Woolworths singing Whispering Grass ("sing Lofty!"). He had set an amp with his mic and was singing karaoke-style as a means of promoting his latest album.
I don't know how many he sold but I couldn't help feeling that it was a bit sad that such a talent had to resort to such measures to flog his wares.
Ahd yes, he did have a lovely voice. |

I do the same as I don't always listen to Drivetime on Fridays. It's more often than not the iPlayer, time permitting.

I saw him doing the same in Woolworths in Blackpool sometime in the early 1980s. A few years later he was roped in by our local council to bring in the new year, despite not having any connection with the area. |
