The TV and Radio section of today's Telegraph carries an article re jazz broadcasting and quotes one Lewis Carnie from R2 as saying that Jamie Cullum is to take over the Tuesday 7pm slot. That's all it says on the subject.
I'm sure that JC has the potential to make a good presenter and realise that Desmond may have asked to retire, given that he's now 83, but wonder if anyone else has any info on this.

It's the first I've heard of it Ian. I can't find the article online either.
I've only just got back in the habit of listening to it live, so a shame if it does go.

| It does say 10-part show on Jazz, so perhaps Desmond's just cutting down? Anyway, the article makes some good points about the need for more Jazz music, not just on Radio 3 either. |

I agree there should be more jazz on the Radio
But please, not ANOTHER bland singer as presenter on Radio 2 to replace the brilliant desmond Carrington! |

| Radio 2 seems to rest shows for a period of time like they are doing with Michael Ball sunday show. It's a new way instead of completly removing the show. I'm guessing Desmond Carrington show is being rested to make way for Jamie Calum. There isn't any room in the schedules to move Desmond so they rest him, and replace it with a series of shows. I suspect this may happen with other Light Programme shows during the week? I hope that I'm right, for sake of Desmond Carrington fans. |

They've never 'rested' Desmond Carrington though Mark, neither when he was on Sundays nor since he was moved to Tuesday nights some years ago.
Of course Desmond could have asked for a break.

It was terrific, and more so because we thought we might be losing it soon. We listened whilst driving back home, and had a good sing along with the Hollywood Film music greats. The thought struck me that although I knew all the words to these songs, and could sing along, enlivening (for me at least) a boring journey, I wasn't actually around when any of them were created, and they were never hits when I was, shall we say a sentient being. I just knew them because my parents knew them, and played them. And for that reason they have a particular nostalgic significance for me now.
And I started to wonder, if today's kids only ever remember what their parents are playing/singing along to..... what will happen to these great songs, if the radio stations that were supposed to be catering for this need, are playing less and less "middle of the road" stuff?
And then I got depressed......

Hi Minx,
Had similar thoughts to yours while listening! I could picture my Mum singing along when they were played on the radio or in the case of a couple when she played the records.
They will be lost forever and as for singing along, I think you'd be hard pushed to sing along to many of the recent songs. Do they have a tune??

On R2 you say Jamie Cullum is taking over on April 7th. So how on earth can you now say you think he's being rested only for the 10 week show?
10 weeks from April 7th doesn't take us to Autumn................  ???

Desmond Carringtons' show is the one truly distinctive prog remaining on Radio 2. They're bonkers to get rid of it.
Who on earth makes these silly decisions? And if they are resting people, why don't tey rest tose two chatty northern geezers? Plenty of room there for Jazz progs.

"chatty Northern Geezers"??  They've just been voted best radio show by Mojo Magazine readers.. and I agree with them.
I listened to a sizeable chunk last night and it's always about music and related information. They even had the bottle to say neither particularly liked Ian Drury's music when discussing the new film.
It's a great show imo...

That does make me think a bit better of them.
i liked Ian Drury's "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick" at the time but, overall, since his passing, I think his music has been lionised as something much more than it was.
I recall I was at pollytechnic & was at a party, Someone had put on "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" & i was thinking, this is all pretty repetative, uninteresting stuff.
If people enjoyed his music, fair enough.
I even enjoy some of Mika's & Paolo Nutini's music, but i wouldn't rate him as one of the greats |

| Could it not be possible MC Desmo is moving back to Sundays? He was not happy when he was moved to Tuesdays, so perhaps April will see a schedule re-jig on Sunday that will, if I may pray for it, involve the axing of Steve Wright's Sunday Love Songs. |

Every shuffle brings hope of the axing of Steve Wright, but it's always dashed. I'm not getting my hopes up again! |

That would be brilliant. My fear is they will shunt the show into a late night spot like they have done with Suzi Quatro et al. I hope I am wrong.
Sunday afternoon would be brilliant. Or sunday morning. |

If it helps, this was published today. Desmond moves to Fridays as of April 6. and Friday Night is Music Night will be broadcast 8-10pm. Jamie will be taking the Tuesday slot.

Oh dear lord. Neither Jamie Cullum nor Jazz is suitable for that slot (and, no, I don't think Paul Jones Monday show works in that slot either). In fact, I suppose the 7-8pm show is an odd one generally and maybe there should be comedy/quizzes/documentaries there instead to bridge the gap to evening.
Anyway... what about Listen To The Band? |

I'm sure Desmond will be pleased about moving to Friday evening. Actually it's going to be quite a good line up for Friday evenings if it's followed by Friday Night is Music Night.

As to the 7PM slot, I think it is fine as the specialist music slot, though I think 7 till 9PM should be specialist progs, giving them a bit more room to breathe.
And are the two Chatty Northern Geezers still on 8 till 10PM? Move them to Drivetime, freeing up mid evenings 7 giving us a decent drivetime Show in one fell swoop.
Mid evening schedule would be great something like this:
Monday -7PM Paul Jones' R & B
8PM Jamie Culums' Jazz
Tuesday-7PMDavid Jacobs- Standards
8PMListen To The Band
Wednesday-7PM Mike Harding-Folk
8PM Jools Holland
Thursday 7PMBob Harris' Americana
8PM Richard Wooten's Country
Friday 7PM Desmond Carrington
8PM Friday Night is Music Night
Monday to Thursday
9PM till 11PM- Suzi Quatro |
