This sounds ridiculous. Yet it was The Times that broke the news re the axing of 6Music, so I guess there's a strong reason for believing this to be true. Surely, rebranding the station is going to cost more than just keeping it running? I mean they share facilities as it is, so I cant see how they can save money doing this.
Richard Bacon did a lovely parody the other week of what Radio 2 Extra would sound like. Taking "The Xtra Factor" as an example, he played out a 'behind the scenes' programme for Steve Wright - showing how the factoids are created. Funny stuff. |

6 Music could be rebranded to Radio 2 Extra and reduced to 12 hours a day. Like the old Radio 1.

Why is it sensible? They've realised they've made a mistake and instead of admitting that, they have done a half-baked u-turn and made unneccesary changes that won't affect the budget one iota. |

A question maybe asked. " What do they do with the other 12 hours?
Simulcast Radio 2 for the other 12 hours. Which shows? 7pm onwards? Or shows during the day? Steve Wright in the afternoon and drivetime? |

Nick-It seems a very sensible suggestion for exactly the reason you state-they have realised they have made a huge mistake in proposing to drop 6 Music.
A station on the air for about 12 hours a day instead of the current format will save shed-loads of money.
Hopefully they can revamp the shows/music played on both Radio 2 and 6 Music to suit all age groups/musical tastes etc.
Lets see more detail first before judging it as a half baked idea. |

| There are a lot of shows for example - Record Producers and Radcliffe and Maconie could be aired on 2 extra? More shows which Radio 2 air and commission could be aired sooner rather than later. |

Are you kidding? They'd use exactly the same techniques as are used by a zillion satellite TV stations - namely to program the playout server to fill up the schedule with stuff stored on the system. You don't need any human beings to do manual jobs - the system just does the work. Just like wot I can do with iTunes!
Much of what is broadcast now pulls files from shared server systems like Galileo, so in principle it's easy. |

I can't see that, really. 6Music costs either £9mill or £6mill a year to run. The main costs are surely accomodation, license, staff, etc. 6Music is only really 'live' for 12 hours a day anyway - so the overnight voice-tracked pieces probably pale into insignificance. This is all conjecture, but I really can't see it saving much. |

My argument against axing 6 music (besides the fact that I do listen to it at times) is, why go to all the expense of setting the station up just to close it down after only 10 years or so?

I agree with you, Lord Evan Elpuss. It's unfair they want to do this cheap rebranding stunt.
They'd do better dropping all the pointless cookery shows on TV like Out Of The Frying Pan and The Useless, I mean Delicious Miss Dahl.

It's all a very clever piece of PR. First, you propagate a story that you're considering withdrawing something, then you float the idea of a compromise, then you claim it was all false. In the meantime, you're able to guage the reaction and get people sharing their own thoughts. You can then feed all this back to your paymasters who then reflect on the situation and make concrete decisions.
All people working in PR in a corporate and political context know this "controlled-leak-then-deny-it-all" game only too well. |
