I have tuned into Radio 4's Today prog on a few ocasions to catch upon the pre and post election shenanigans.
I was forced to switch over by the pomposity and especially by the increasingly out of control rantings of John Humphries. For example, Humphries was literally SCREAMING at Labours Ben Bradshaw this morning. John seemed unable to comprehend the simple fact that political parties can go into a coa;lition with other parties without becomming a different party.
Bradshaw showed admirable restraint in the face of humphries rantings. Bradshaw argued patiently and logicly. Followed by a random anti-New labour rant by Humphries followed by more calm reason from Bradshaw.
The Radio 4 PM prog is very good. But "Today" is a ranting mess.
Any other views on this?

Agreed about JH - high time he was pensioned off. Most interviews he conducts consist of nothing more than his hectoring and interrupting. I like the Today prog but it would be better without him.

i agree with you MIS. The Today prog overall veers too much towards pomposity for my liking, but i defenitely think it would be better without JH. too much hectoring &harrumphing for easy digestion.
I don't see how Humphries could not understand the idea of a coalition- parties retain their own identity but will work together with other parties where possible & necessary.
I find the PM show far better than Today

More forums going,

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio4/NF2766771?thread=8131856

closing the Radio 4 and Radio 7 messageboards (with the exception of The Archers) at the end of March.

Interesting to read:

Quote:
"these messageboards attract a very small number of users. In the case of Radio 4ís messageboard, only around 350 different people post in a month and fewer than 3000 people worldwide visit the messageboards (this out of an average of 1m weekly visitors to our website in January)".

Edit: Soz there's a thread elsewhere Rolling Eyes

Some good jokes on the Today Programme this morning about how to make sport and the Olympics more interesting:

1) Football matches with three teams taking part on a triangular pitch.
2) Put quicksand in the long jump.
3) In a particularly boring marathon, every half hour shoot the last three.

Remind me never to take part in a marathon - I was never any good at sport in school!

Fred, never take part in a marathon Laughing

All I can say is thank goodness for Radio 4. Since Sarah K left and the unmentionable one made Radio 2 a no-go area, Today has been my regular wake-up call. Sure, it gets irritating, and some presenters are better than others (see above!) but on the whole a good listen. Drives me mad though, they can't stick to timings and the Weather forecast is always too rushed... Rolling Eyes

Alex Lester wasn't on that day was he? I seem to remember he had a thread going on this very thing on his R2 show some years ago. See here & click 'Tri-team football': http://homepage.ntlworld.com/b.harbison1/slapmytop/gallery.html

Just listening to For One Night Only on R4. This week it's B B King in 1964, Live at the Regal. Well worth a listen on the player.

I suppose I should thank Chris Evans and Steve Wright for helping me to find out what a good station R4 is; to the extent that I rarely tune back to R2 for Ken Bruce nowadays.
