Smooth Radio will be going national on DAB later this year and hopefully going to try and challenge Radio 2. Not like they have been since changing their name. I wonder if Lynn Parsons will also stay at the station?

Its transmissions won't be very smooth outside the large metropolitan areas if the current dire state of DAB is anything to do by! |

What was it called previously?
If they are going to "try and challenge Radio 2", will they be having a playlist and employing shouty presenters with enormous egos? Or will they instead offer us what we want - quality music from several decades played by knowledgeable and unintrusive broadcasters? _________________ MiS |

I think it was Jazz FM before, but that was a long time ago.

Quote: | How will the schedule look for the new station?
We will announce the new line-up in due course. But we can expect to see a line-up of experienced broadcasters with a love for and knowledge of the music that Smooth Radio has become renowned for. |
I wonder which big names they will bring in?
Quote: | Is the aim to create a “commercial Radio 2” and will the station therefore adverise the fact that it is, from October 4th, no longer a regional station.
The aim is to create a national commercial alternative to BBC Radio 2. We will continue to inform listeners of all their listening options, whether it be on FM, Digital One, regional DAB, Sky, Freeview or Freesat. |
They have a fight on there hands.

Well there's a contradiction , how are they going to 'challenge R2' if only using DAB ? |

I agree. I think it's dire. It's a bit like saying to someone who has very limited knowledge of music and musicians: "OK, play me a selection of music that will inspire and surprise me" and they come up with the stuff you've heard a million times on every radio station up and down the country for years.
I've driven to Cambridge and back tonight and actually had my car radio tuned to R2 rather than listen to music from my iPhone. Radcliffe & Maconie were doing their usual stuff and it was most entertaining as usual and played some lovely music that I'd never heard before. That's what I want to hear - not the sort of branded, same cornflakes in every packet, rubbish that's heard on the likes of Smooth! |
