What a fine show it was this Sunday (18th July). The second-half interview with Bob Harris talking about the upcoming Old Grey Whistle Test album compilation and more was such good radio that got me through my Monday morning quite nicely. |

This is presumably the same OGWT which was released last month, and which they can't seem to give away - it's £6.99 in Asda as I write.
Universal Records has issued a similar compilation of 70s rock - Wonderous Stories. If anyone's tempted I'd hold your powder, cos it will probably be discounted after a month as well.
(Nothing against the music therein, but anybody who's interested in it will almost certainly have most of the tracks already. Apart from the live ones, I think the only one I haven't got, in full, is the Whistle Test theme - Area Code 615's Stone Fox Chase.) _________________ Ron |

Yes, I guess that was the motivation for his appearance on the show. I'm not really interested in the album - I'd much rather have an album containing actual performances from the show itself - but I thought the whole chat itself as very entertaining and enlightening.
Interestingly, Bob referred to the earliest shows in 1971 but made no reference at all to its first presenter, Richard Williams. |

Is the producer a fan of the Trigger Happy TV repeats on Viva? Wings's 'Nineteen Hundred & Eighty Five' was one of the songs used on this and the whole of the song was used today.
Dom Joly must have made Paul McCartney very happy indeed - even as Heather Mills was profiting from him! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Expect to hear more from Paul and the Band On The Run album, which is due to be reissued on 1st November, the first nugget (in so many different formats I lost the will to live trying to read the blurb) of his new deal with Concord. _________________ Ron |

Had to smile at Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band's 'A 5th of Beethoven' - because I think of Les Dawson going 'Ha-ha-ha-HA...' in a sketch about Beethoven giving evidence in court! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Enjoyed the interview with Duane Eddy and Johnnie today, preceded of course by THAT theme. Missed first hour so will catch up later.

I hear SOT70s every other week and i'm sure Rod Stewart's You wear it well is played every time
Even if it's Johnnie's personal favourite (or more likely the producer's) there are thousands of tracks from the decade to mean no repeats for months on a once a week show |

The show was brilliant on ( 5th December 2010 ). He got people to email and text him and playing some great songs. It's a shame he doesn't present a main stream show. I do miss him covering breakfast. |

I seldom listen to SOT70s because, looking at the 'music played' on the website, it's just a conveyor belt of hit singles which we all know.
What happened to the Johnnie Walker who spent the late 60s and 70s ignoring chart fodder and (rightly) championing album tracks? |

Yes that's the point Schiz, he's completely wasted doing what he is doing now and it would be better in my view to scrap SOT 70s put Johnnie on breakfast and move Pick of the Pops to the vacant Sunday slot which is without doubt where by tradition it should be _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I listen regularly - but if it were merely a conveyor belt of 70s chart hit singles then I wouldn't bother. In fact, I've been impressed by Johnnie's inclusion of non-charting artists who I remember from the 70s with whom Johnnie has conducted some interesting and insightful chats with his guests.
I guess I'm just grateful for Radio 2 programming that doesn't force me to lunge for the "off" button as is so often the case these days!
Johnnie is worth a much better slot (or slots) of course, but I don't expect Bob "I'm a Clueless Idiot" Shennan to recognise the fact. |

Bob Shennan must love Candi Staton's 'Young Hearts Run Free' because that's on nearly as much as the Faces' 'Stay With Me'! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

We like the show (hubby and I) JW is fab but I don't like that bit when some total bore of a listener comes on to talk about their 70s. Jes' where do they get these people! |

I thought last week's (not yesterday's, but the previous weekend I mean) was good. The woman must be the same age as me and obviously went to see the same bands and her choice was fab. What I like about the slot is that, very occasionally, it introduces music from the era that's slightly more obscure - at least to those who only listened to daytime radio. Some time back a guest included a track from Stackridge, one of the period's finest touring bands who played superb gigs, mostly on the college and twon hall circuit although they did play support at some of the larger outdoor events like Knebworth, etc.
In a sense, getting people's personal lists provides evidence that there was so much more happening than was implied by daytime Radio One at the time. Let's face it, daytime R1 was pretty dire in the early/mid 70s. |

They should get an actor in, to do the voice of the listener- some of them are so monotone it hurts. |

Yes, Stackridge has always been a fantastic band. That said, I haven't seen them perform since before punk crashed on the scane in 1976! |
