Mine is Bagdad Café.

Just the most fabulous, funny, atmospheric film with a wonderful soundtrack and probably the best theme song of any movie ever:

If you haven't seen this movie I can't recommend it highly enough. Directed by the German director Percy Adlon and starring the fabulous Marianne Sagebrecht (don't worry - it's not in German, apart from the first couple of minutes) with CCH Pounder and a wonderful cameo performance from Jack Palance.

Couldn't ever plump for just one, Soulsis, but one that always comes to mind on this subject is Cinema Paradiso....I ADORE it ..The characters, the feel of it, the music.....it's just an all round wonderful film....and what's more you'll feel better for watching it... ..what better recommendation could you have..... Very Happy

Ennio Morricone is a God.

Although I've heard of it of course, I've never seen the film - but I will make a point of it now.

I'm not really into films but one film I always enjoy watching is Clockwise
John Cleese at his superb best and much better than his other efforts in my non expert humble opinion

At the moment because it will change, 'Kingdom of Heaven' but the definitive cut not the cinema version, far better characterisation and back story. Very Happy

For years and years George Lucas and Star Wars had this title with me sewn up, I was 4 when we went to see it.
However my tastes have changed dramatically it would seem and I hardly ever watch SW any more.

My favorites at the moment are

Also in my teens I came across French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet
and I can watch Amelie every day, and Becky's avatar just makes me smile when ever I see it, Audrey Tatou is lovely

I'm afraid that, for me, it doesn't get better than "A Hard Day's Night" (1964). Directed in B&W by Dick Lester, produced by the late Walter Shenson at United Artists and featuring (of course!) the Fab Four it defines the energy and sheer madness of Beatlemania.

It's a plausible storyline by the late Alun Owen and it's full of fabulous, wonderful and marvellous songs.

My mum took my brother and I to the cinema in Plymouth to see it and I can honestly I never heard a word of dialogue of line of a song because of the screaming girls - but hey what an atmosphere!

As the audience left the cinema the projectionist played "If I Fell" over the music system and from that day it was - and is - my favourite song of all time. How guys so young could write a song of such beauty is beyond me.......

Some great replies folks - and Col's memories of A Hard Day's Night chime very much with my own. I too remember being taken to a packed cinema as a young child and thinking it was the most wonderful thing I had ever seen or heard in my life.

Whenever I hear people denigrate the Beatles or say things like 'they weren't that great' - all I can say is you just had to be there, to experience the impact they had on ... well everything really.

So although I would never say A Hard Day's Night is my favourite film of all time, I remember the excitement of seeing it and of course, that wonderful, incredible music, the likes of which we'd never heard before.

Soulsis: what you and ColinB say tallies with my own experience! I remember seeing A Hard Days Night with my mother on a rainy August day on holiday in Torquay in 1964. The film was good enough, but the music was and still is sublime. In fact, although an 'early' Beatles album, it is up there with Abbey Road and their later albums.

Someone on the old Radio 2 boards recently pointed out that it's the only Beatles' album with songs written just by Lennon/McCartrney.

Anyway to get back to the film, I saw it recently on TV. Have to say I turned off after about 20 minutes. It's cetainly dated and perhaps was never that good.

Oh, I'd say it's good.. but of course it's of it's time and was all very new to us teenagers back then. Zany, funny, stupid but it was the Beatles and nothing could be wrong about it.

I particularly loved the part where Ringo was sulking in the Baggage car on the train and they played "I should have known Better" ( I think... may be wrong!) to cheer him up.

But I must admit, on a recent viewing, I did squirm at the part when they "broke out" of the theatre and played silly buggers on the grass...
"Can't Buy Me Love" was it? Laughing
