Cherskiy,
If you'd had the 45 of 'Jimmy Mack' by Martha and the Vandellas at the time, on flipping it over you would have found an equally good track called 'Third Finger Left Hand'. A favourite of mine, although I only discovered it on the 1097 re issue as it was well played in the NE discos at the time!

Helen I'm shocked as I didn't realise they had discos in 1097
I seem to remember the Elgins doing a cover of the track in or around 1971 but I could be wrong
I remember when I first used to go to my local disco in St Helens there was a girl who always used to drag me up to dance when that particular track came on
I met her a few years ago and we were talking about that very track _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

My wife loves that song too, and although I absolutely love Martha's "Dancing in the Street" I have to admit I'd never heard "Third Finger" until we got together in 1977. She knows it word for word! |

Helen, a girl after my own heart, we must be about the same age I guess as 3rd finger.. takes me back to saturday nights at the winter gardens (and I too can sing it word for word). I suppose music evolves all the time but whatever happened to the quality music that was Motown or Philly or Stax etc? |

It just stands out whenever it's played doesn't it!
Only a few weeks ago we were on our way to a house warming party of a very old friend of mine, and had Smooth on, they have a Motown show on Saturdays. Just as we turned off the motorway, the station started to fade and Third Finger Left came on I kept turning up the volume. Sort of spooky as it was both mine and my friends fave disco track of the time. She laughed when I told her as it took us both right back.

Too true.. and somewhat of a coincidence as last night, I watched an old VHS recording of a Motown Tribute shown on TV several years back.
It was in black and white and Dusty Springfield introduced fantastic bands such as Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Temptations, Martha and the Vandellas and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles..
What a great, lively ( and live!) fun show it was! such a shame that quality of music has died away... So glad I was born in the 50s!! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I found the Smooth Radio Motown Show a few weeks ago. Absolutely fantastic. Last week they played a track "Child of Love" by Caston & Majors. Brilliant. It doesn't seem to have been released as a single here so not sure how I know it but I could remember it so well. I think we have gone off the thread here a bit - suppose we should make a Motown revival thread! |

You better start getting use to it.
Zoe will feature more and more on Radio 2 going forward.
I predict she will take over from Ken Bruce permanently within the next 12 months. |

Great. That means we'll have "wittering gobs" from 6.30am until lunchtime. Now there's something to look forward to. |

Each to their own.
I for one enjoy the Chris Evans beakfast show and enjoy listening to Zoe Ball when she sits in for Ken Bruce who I can't stand. Bruce gives me the creeps. |

What I admire most about Evans and Ball (and their ilk) is their ability to talk - incessantly - even when there's nothing interesting to talk about. It's like there's an "auto" switch in their brains that automatically generates cackle even if there's nothing intelligent or interesting to communicate. I've heard this on independent local radio stations as well. Is there a specific gene pool from which such presenters are drawn? |

Spot on Colin.. you're so right! There's such a hypocritical element in there too as far as I'm concerned.
Ms Ball and Chris Evans.. like a pair of hyperventilating blabbering kids using their "skill" to earn even more ridiculous amounts of cash to add to their already vulgar financial positions.. and yet they can pretend to be thrilled and amazed that Mr & Mrs boring have been married for 20 years, giggle because some other poor sod's kid has done something boring and declare that everything in the real world is brilliant and fantastic.... well it isn't. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

It was Becky, but when Stuart Maconie was doing Drivetime for Johnnie! It was instead of Johnnie's 'Crusin' and you got a prize for it. From memory it was a R2 T shirt, a mouse mat and a keyring!

I wouldn't say Ken gives me the creeps, but he does grate on me with his shouting & his odd vocal inflections. A bit similar to Chris evans.
But Zoe Ball has a great voice that is well modulated & even, no sudden jumps & yelps if you know what I mean
If my radio had one of those light things which monitor sound flow during Ken bruce (& probably Chris evans) it would be bopping up & down alarmingly and unevenly
With Zoe ball it would be plain sailing, fairly even on calm waters. That's how I like it |

"odd vocal inflections"
I have no idea what you're talking about. Zoe Ball is more like tinnitus than calm and well modulated. |

Zoe Ball talks too quickly and says "er" much too often. She would be much easier on the ear if she talked just a little more slowly.

They just played a Ken Bruce trailer on the radio & it was quite alarming. I am staying with his shows now, but don't see the need for all the yelping he does. I prefer the calm, steady style of Zoe Ball |
