Zoe Ball will be lowering the tone in Ken's absence next week. If you like listening to fatuous drivel on fast forward, enjoy. I won't be listening to Radio 2 at all next week. |

I think Matthew Bannister is doing JV next week too, I'm sure he said he would be back Monday after his stint this week. Time to get out some recordings that I've made and never got round to listening to!
I suppose it's to be expected as they both have school age children and it's half term (apart from Scotland I think?).

Deep joy, my Ipod will be getting a lot more use next week then, I must upload some more tracks.
Its becoming obvious now that she will be stepping into Ken's shoes in the (probably) not too distant future. Just as Mayo was groomed for drivetime.
Ahh I remember the days when Stuart Maconie, Richard Allinson and Aled Jones used to sit in for Ken, those were the days! |

It will be a Radio 2 - free zone here all next week, as Ken's is the only show I listen to now. What has happened to what used to be a really good station? _________________ MiS |

I caught that yesterday too Aviddiva. What an unexpected pleasure.
I never listen to Ken's programme so a replacement is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. |

I have returned to Radio 2. Been listening to Ken. In spite of the silliness, still a good show. Even listening to part of Jeremy Vine but as for bannister "Up with that I will not put!". Even the Steve wright Show is OK in small doses
I enjoyed Zoe Ball last time she was on |

I don't mind Zoe, she's bubbly and has a nice personality (and she's less pompous and patronising than the regular host).
I do wish she'd realise, though, that not all her listeners are women. I do get fed up with the vacuous requests to 'tell us what your fella's doing'. And the usual 'phwoar, he's fit' comments.
No doubt the music will be just as dire. |

Excellent news that Zoe is back on Radio 2 covering for Ken Bruce.
Looking forward to her stint. Hopefully Bones is also off the same time as Bruce. |

What wrong with Gary Bones? He's actually the producer of the show, and will be there. |

I actually prefer Matthew Bannister to JV, sorry
However I cannot bear to listen to Zoe Ball at all, anyone but anyone would be better than her. |

Marc: most of the posts here and on the old Radio 2 boards were rightly critical of Gary Bones' music choices. The stuff that is played between 0930 and 12, weekdays, is utterly bland, forgettable, cheesy, unoriginal...and as camp as a row of tents.
The music played last week was in fact quite good, and the producer was someone else as Gary Bones was on holiday! |

I'm afraid I have a against Mr Staircase ever since he destroyed what was an excelent lkocal radio station, BBC Radio London. He replaced it with GLR to which few listened & did not last long

I do too. JV is like a cat on hot bricks; the way he cuts callers short before they've finished their quite reasonable contributions really annoys me. |

The problem is when he's got the ex mail staff working for him, they like to see if they can sometimes get two on who are about to fight like cats. He does sometimes sound interested, if only the person knows what they are on about, or he wants more information, when his team have mis informed him. |

Ken Bruce should take a Masterclass from her to see how it should be done |

I tuned in for Popmaster. Wottashambles! She got both scores wrong, shouts too much and is just generally annoying.
Au contraire, Clive, it is Ms Ball who should be taking lessons from the legendary Mr Bruce _________________ MiS |

Well I listened to a recording of Aled ( thanks to my programmeable cassette alarm radio, an oldie but goodie type of technology ) with my breakfast but I'm listening to some old recordings just now. May have a look at what is on Matthew Bannister later but if topics aren't good, it is half term and silly season tends to kick in, I'll go back to my minidiscs until Drivetime.

Where to begin? She won't shut up. What she has to say isn't remotely interesting. She sounds as if she's got strong coffee on a drip. Her inane chatter is in stark contrast to the relaxed, professional style of the usual presenter. She makes me angry and I don't like being angry. The word quality and Zoe Ball as a radio presenter are diametrically opposed. If she was made permanent in this time, I could easily develop a passionate hatred for the BBC.
That'll do for starters. |

I caught her getting something wrong on PopMaster and saying 'oh it IS Monday'............
Was just switching from the tuner to the aux input on the hi fi, I didn't hang around for more!

I don't know. I thought it was all quite calm & amiable, with none of the wildly flucting tones of Ken!
I surprised myself by enjoying Mathew Bannister. He is a better presenter than JV, & not so obnoxiously smug on air
I disliked Bannister as axeman, but as presenter today he did well |

Great show by Zoe Ball today-as you say Clive a natural-nothing to dislike.
Hope she gets the gig full time when the incumbent leaves.
In addition, I too, also think Matthew Bannister is excellent in the midday hot seat-very accomplished in the role. |

Her links are so quick. It does sound like she's just had a massive cafferine in-take. I must ask the bloke at work who knows her hubby and occassionally cooks for them both.
I do like Matthew Bannister covering. I liked his comment today. " I must listen to Jools Holland after playing his trailer. Interesting comment. I read somewhere he never listened to Bob Harris show on Radio 1 when he was controller and said to him "why should I listen". |

I agree with you on both, Mark.
I disliked Bannister because of his role in dismantling BBC Radio London & I didn't take to him at all when watching "Blood On The Carpet"
But I was very impressed with him on the lunchtime show.
And I thought Zoe Ball was great. Not OTT at all.
I defenitely think she should have a regular daytime show on Radio 2. Whether it be Kens' show or steve wrights? |

I cannot stand her "show format" she does though fit better with the CEBS genre. Not good news for those of us who prefer a more "gentle" approach in the mornings. The way the Beeb is going though she will take over from Ken. Has anyone noticed its the only recurrent holiday stand in does not bode well for the future.
In an ideal World Chris and Zoe would be on radio 2 extra (shouty channel) and the FM channel would be left for those of us who prefer the "light programme" format. |

In your last comment I think you touch on something I have felt about radio today. There is a defenite gap in the market- the sort of radio station Radio 2 used to be years ago. A statiion which plays alot of the sort of stuff David Jacobs & MC Desmo play. A radio station that would appeal to the older demographic. "Melody" was aimed at that market, but since it became Magic it has shifted to be a hugely succesful station but not fulling that gap. there is defenitely a place for such a radio station |

We've discussed this before. Saga also filled the gap, such as it is.
Neither Saga nor Melody were commercially viable.
Would the vast majority of licence-payers be happy if the BBC spent money on a "Radio 2 Extra" for the small audience which listened to them? _________________ Ron |
