Today is Zoe Balls' last day standing in for Ken this week. I would like to thank her for the excelent job she has done. A breath of fresh air. She displays true proffesionalism & outstanding ability.
This lady certainly deserves a daytime show on Radio 2. 6 till 8AM on a Satueday is too early for me.
Perhaps she could take over the afternoon show. Steve wright is a good broadcaster but his show has become stale. Zoe would make a refreshing change.
I look forward to the next half term when presumably Zoe will be standing in for Ken again!  |

I completely disagree Clive. I've tuned in for Popmaster a few times but she is just awful - shouty, name-dropping, baby talk...no thanks! Thank goodness Ken is back on Monday.

I suppose we all have different tastes. I like Zoe Ball's voice. Friendly, well modulated & her verbal interjections between the songs are concise.
Radio 2 does not have any female dj's at present, which is a bit odd in the 21st century. Zoe Ball in a daytime slot would be a good start to remedying this anomaly |

Sorry Clive but I'm with MiS on this one. Working from home I thought that I would enjoy some KB. Oh dear!. Can someone tell her to stop gabbling please? And yes Zoe, we know you've got kids
Mind you, I'm all in favour of her in place of Mr Mediocre in the afternoon. Then again, I'm all in favour of anyone else in that slot

Lynn Parsons can run rings round Zoe Ball when it comes to presentational ability and from the New Year I would like to hear less (or preferably no)Zoe and a lot more Lynn
I'll switch back on next week when Ken is back
He's a true professional and far superior to Ms Ball anyday

I'm afraid I'm also in favour of Ms Ball being denied a daytime slot - although taking over SW's show would be acceptable as I've got into the habit of listening to anything but R2 between 2 and 5 during the week.

I've tried, I really have, but I really can't stand the woman. What really gets my goat with people generally, but she has it in spades, is making ignorance a virtue.
Not knowing stuff, getting stuff wrong and generally being a bit of a ditz is not funny and not clever - it's lazy, sloppy and unprofessional.

I have only one real complaint about Zoe Ball and that's the pace at which she speaks. Too fast.
There's an art to timing, particularly leaving pauses at the end of paragraphs. I've helped to train hospital radio presenters and talking too quickly is a common fault, usually due to nerves. Lynn Parsons talks at a more reasonable pace, but doesn't leave the pauses I feel she should when she change subject. She's also managed to remove all the sincerity from "How are you?", quite a feat!
And someone really ought to teach Sally Traffic how to use a microphone without popping. You never hear Lynn Bowles making that sort of mistake.

A microphone works by having a diaphragm that vibrates with the air around it. Clever electrical effects are used to convert this mechanical movement into electrical signals that can be used by the mixing desk.
To make this work you're relying on the diaphragm being a good mimic of the air vibrations around it. This is fine for smaller vibrations, but the diaphagm is essentially a spring and it gets stiffer when you ask it to move too much and it no longer follows the air movements exactly.
When the diaphagm doesn't follow the air you get distortion. Shouting too close to the microphone will do this, for example - that's why you'll sometimes see singers hold the microphone further away for the louder notes/passages of a song.
The other problem, though, is that the way humans generate speech creates pressure pulses as a byproduct of making certain sounds. And yes, you're right, the letter P is a good example. You can feel this by putting your hand in front of your mouth as you speak; P sounds give a pressure pulse you can feel.
These pressure pulses push the microphone's diaphragm pretty much to its endstops. Horrible distortion that comes over as a pop.
I train hospital radio presenters to point the mic towards their mouth but not in front of the mouth - typically I put mine about six inches from my face, in front of my nose, pointing slightly down at my mouth. That way the pressure pulses pass under the mic and my dulcet ramblings are picked up clearly.
Wind shields can help, but they're not the complete answer.
Many mics are directional, too; they pick up the air vibrations better in some directions than others. The frequency response is different in different directions, too. For most presenters there is a "sweet spot" where the performance of the microphone matches their voice and they get the best sound.
This is pretty basic to the mechanics of broadcasting and you would hope that Radio 2's presenters should be able to cope. Some can...

I honestly cannot stand to listen to her. How anybody at the BBC could pass this fiasco of a presenter for public broadcasting is beyond me!
Normally, I wouldn't care less as lately, I've decided Radio 2 is now so bad it simply isn't for me anymore for large chunks of the week.. but this morning I headed off to the wood yard in my truck, turned the radio on and in 15 minutes I heard her babbling on about her brother, her dad, X Factor!!! and how everything is brilliant.. all with far too many "errrrs"
As usual now, I turned it off.
I'm sorry to say, I've had enough of the Ball/Evans click and the rubbish music they play between them.. are we all fed up with the new Take That single yet? YAWN!

Not true Clive. There's Janice Long & (as mentioned in another thread) Jo Whiley.
Although, maybe not everyone's 'cup of tea', there's Elaine Paige & Claire Teal on Sundays, although, granted, the last two mentioned do present specialist music shows, having said that, Claire Teal did sit in on the Dawn Patrol at least once.

I'm sure Zoe Ball would go "Err" less often if she spoke a little more slowly. "Err" is a space-filler while the brain thinks about what it wants to say next and speaking more slowly can give that extra time.

Take That's new song isn't too bad, and I've liked some of their recent stuff. And I always want to hear new songs providing they are good. It's preferable to hearing the usual pap (ELO etc).
CE played a Led Zep song this morning. Guess which one it was.
You're right, it was Stairway To Heaven!!
(oh, hang on, that's a silly question. Everyone knows that Stairway was the only song Led Zep ever did). |

| Zoe is doing her own show on Saturday then she be covering for Dermot from 6th November for 5 weeks. Personally I think she's more suited to that type of show. |

Well I accept that many people will like it and other new songs today but why does the BBC feel the need to play them to death? it's so typical over the last few years.. they latch onto some band and ram them down our throats.
As I mentioned elsewhere on here, I'm content now to only listen to stuff I like and sod Radio 2 and it's mundane play list.
I'd also like a new radio that blocked anything by Elton John...

I've heard him play Whole Lotta Love and Rock and Roll (and I don't listen every day).
Take That's The Flood is OK, but not in ELO's league. Hear it once, you've heard it a hundred times (and you will, cos it's on the A list).

I think he desperately needs MORE holidays!
Zoe Ball is the DJ who has surprised me. When I heard about her, she was part of that Lad/Ladette Radio 1 "culture" & I recoiled in horror
But listening to her she has really grown up & equips herself very well on air.
As to the saturday afternoon show, I have given up on that even when Zoe is the host. Pref to the regular presenter but I don't like the format of the show or the type of artistes featured on it.
A Saturday Afternoon show in the mould of Roger Scott's saturday Sequence would be great. Maybe Bob harris or Gambo could host |
