I think John Krazinsky (Jim in the US version of The Office) could be Jim-Bob grown up! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

He's in my house too!
What I don't understand is, why does my TV sometimes "pix-elate" whilst watching Virgin fed through a fibre optic cable? I'd understand if it was aerial in windy conditions but a cable underground? don't get it... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Santa
I think it's to do with the way that Virgin receive the signal and how bad the weather is there ?

Usually, most cable distribution systems operate a "head-end" - a point at which the main feed is pulled and then re-distributed.
If you're getting what's called mosaic drop-out, that's because the feed is being pulled from either a satellite or terrestrial digital source and where tiny losses in the signal result in parts of the picture appearing blocky where there's no up-to-date information for those pixels so it merely repeats old ones. This is exactly the same symptom as a dirty DVD which produces blockiness on playback.
My guess is that they're pulling a satellite feed, and adverse atmospheric conditions are causing drop-outs in the datastream that arrives at the receiving dish. |

Yes, I'm pretty sure the problem does indeed occur in windy or wet weather.. It's not really a problem for us, it's just every now and then and I wondered what would cause it.
When we had an aerial, we would very often get a poor picture due to atmospherics.. sometimes getting ghosting from foreign stations.
I just assumed the Virgin signal piped directly into our TV would be perfect all the time... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

It would be if it came via fibre-optic link (very high bandwidth) direct from the source. Unfortunately, any form of over-air distribution has its limitations (witness the abomination that is DAB in most parts of the UK). |
