I think I'll be listening most of the day and evening.

Good to see Bill Kenwright's Golden Years has been given a two hour special on Boxing Day in the afternoon.

That should please a few people on here after what we said on the Radio 2 board before it was closed.

Radio has always been gack over the festive period and it looks like the broad offer on radio 2 is no exception. Worth avoiding methinks.

Apart from some interesting documentaries, which mabe repeast I missed, and repeated concerts and hopefully Ken I expect R2 to become radio gaga over the festive period as usual with the usual standins and sometimes worse Rolling Eyes

I like the fact they do try to offer something different at holiday times rather than the same programmes we gett every day of the year.

Helen, Bill's show is on between 3pm and 5pm.

I don't think it's too bad on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Ed's Junior Choice, The music special on Dean Martin with his daughter, Kenny Everett of course(even if it's been pieced together from previous output)Documentaries on Eric and Ern, The London Paladium, Jools Holland interviewing Clapton(even if its really to promote his new album)and other specials during the week are welcome and we can always dip into the output of Radio 4 which have some great comedy, drama and documentaries too.

BBC Radio is offering me more entertainment than what is on the tv in general.

I remember I was in America in 2000 not far from the place where she met her death
It was big news in America at the time so that says quite a lot about her

I'm listening to the Kenny Everett documentary and I heard that Jack Jackson was an influence in his using comedy clips and music out of context - would the Dickie Goodman 'break-in' records have also been an influence? I've listened to a lot of those on YouTube.

I would say Everett would have influenced Harry Hill iand Russell Howard in the way he took the michael out of his superiors!

I heard the second hour of the Kenny Everett show. Superb!! I'll catch up on Listen again facility. I thought Kenny's take off of that hippy dippy Beatles tune was hillarious Laughing

The London Paladium docu presented by Michael Freedland is superb. I'll certainly listen to part 2 tommorow, probably listen to this one again on listen again, too! MF always does the show biz docu's better than anyone else.
I did tune in this morning to Jnr choice, but too many dodgy tune & when he played "Too Little boys" I could stand it no more & turned over.
I heard much of Paul O Grady while cooking the chicken! Cool

Listened to both KE shows (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) - great stuff - a presenter who could have a lot of fun but didn't treat the audience as though they were idiots. Smile

I think you are being a tad harsh on the Christmas schedule. There's been an impressive variety of stuff thus far. Of course with variety it does by definition mean that there will be some shows that are not to everybody's taste. However a mix of Ed Stewart, Paul O'Grady, Dean Martin, Kenny Everett and a documantary about the Palladium is I think worthy of more than "the same old crap."

OK, let's just say that I don't find much to inspire me. I haven't listened to R2 at all since before Xmas eve and I haven't missed it at all. I have, however, been listening to loads of really good music on Radio Caroline; no "celeb" presenters, no cheesy "Christmas wrapping" of every programme and absolutely no songs containing the words "Christmas", "Sleigh Bells", "Snow", etc etc., in lyrics. Oh, and all of the programmes have been live as well.

So, in that sense it looks very much to me like Radio 2's schedule did indeed consist mostly of the "same old crap"!!! Wink

Yes, I think it was good entertainment.. particularly the Paul O'Grady show.. he definitely seems to have what it takes to make a decent presenter. I thought the Dean Martin programme was fabulous.. in fact I didn't turn it off until the end, even though I'd moved into the lounge by then. Simply excellent.
I've yet to enjoy the two Kenny Everett shows but from snippets I heard, it too sounded very good.
Weren't you tempted to listen to the KE shows Colin?

Enjoyed Bill Kenwright's two hour slot, but have just had to change to 'Listen Again' (Deana Martin) to get away from the witless wittering of French and Saunders. They were playing some good music when they weren't indulging in unfunny banter - shame.

I heard most of the Dean Martin special and thought I had it on here to listen to later but seem to have deleted it and my present set up isn't really any good with the online player since they changed the settings...

I was happy with a lot of the output on Christmas Day and have listened mainly to radio over Christmas(mostly BBC networks)

Bill's show was worth a listen too but like you French and Saunders just wittered on and I gave up...I won't be listening to the other two programmes planned.

It was pointless but if I had listened to that for two hours I'd feel exhausted.

So I feel much as you do Minx...

I've got Stewpot on the I-player at the moment but the choices are very staid. I found Billy Howard's King Of The Cops and the Rockin' Berries' Rock-A-Bye Nursery Rhyme on YouTube previous to this! Ditto Stan Freberg's Banana Boat Song and George & The Dragnet/Little Blue Riding Hood.

Harry Belafonte's Mary's Boy Child was depressing stuff of the 'Sunday morning God slot' variety.

I'm very pleased to say that I didn't listen to R2 for three days over the Xmas break. I have since cherry-picked a couple of items from iPlayer but that's it. It doesn't appear that I missed much.

Radio Caroline wasn't "christmassy" at all - and for that reason I enjoyed its output hugely!

Re:Frankie Howard's Three Little Fishes - it was a re-recording with 80's synths instead of the big band backing on the original.

When the 'church organ' sound came on at the beginning I thought Stewpot had cued up Yes's Parallels by mistake!

The programme was spoilt by problems with DAB reception Rolling Eyes

I notice the Cliff Richard programme was a repeat today and not as billed in the Radio Times or on the BBC website...it was supposed to be an interview between him and Penny Smith and we got the 2006 Cilla Black programme The Ultimate Cliff Richard Top 20 or something.

I assume they are holding the new programme back or it has never been recorded in the first place. Thye never gave an announcement explaining why the new programme was substituted.

It has been nice to have R2 on continuously from breakfast to teatime without having to race for the off button, or retuning to something less irritating than Evans, Vine and Wright.

I also enjoyed the Kenny Everett specials, and I think that Craig Charles deserves a wider audience for his undisputed talent as a daytime radio host.

Shame that it all went to pot at 16.00 when motormouth Kielty came on air. I'm sure that man talks more rubbish than Evans does, and if anything he's marginally more irritating.
