It's not just R2 that's making a hash of listings. Twice over Christmas I have been caught out by wrong listings on the R4 site (and the currently on info) even though the Radio Times site had them right. Seems to me the BBC online staff need a kick up the posterior. |

Same for the guys that do the titling on the BBC news etc, they always seem to be out of step with the names etc |

Ruddles: there were a few rubbish songs, I agree, and 1961/2 was not the most exciting time, but there were some good ones as well: Tower of Strength by Frankie Vaughan, Midnight In Moscow by Kenny Ball, His Latest Flame by Elvis, the wonderful Moon River by Danny Williams and a good one by Johnny Leyton.
Though the late 60s/early 70s is my favourite era (and I think yours) it's always good to hear the early 60s which along with the 50s is much ignored by the dunderheads who choose the music on Radio 2.
It's 1963 next week. |

Schiz you are right that there was the odd gem but the general impression of the chart today seemed to me to be rather boring
I like 1963 though so I'll look forward to that although as you say the late 60s/early 70s is my favourite era _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Radio Times had it only lasting an hour and still starting at 1pm but Tony said last night it was starting an hour earlier than usual. As Patrick Kielty was starting at 2pm and French and Saunders programmes are two hours at a time...and POTP's is two hours I'd guessed it was a wrong time in the listings but I can imagine many being caught out and being annoyed. |

A problem POTP's will always have is that many charts changed very little and many records stayed there for weeks especially in the Top Twenty...more variety probably existed in the positions below...Did they have a Top 50 in those days?
Really it's a better idea to have programmes like SOTS or Walker's 70's programme(similar one's for other decades perhaps)and yes play familiar tunes but extend the music choice so you hear songs/tunes not played as often and possibly add some material by the artists that were on their albums too.
If I could afford them there is a series of albums(for download as mp's 3 too)called Backline and there so many songs I never hear but I think I would love to on radio. That's only one example...a lot of 50's music is ignored which is a pity...I used to enjoy Ronnie Hilton's Sounds of the 50's. Which has never really been replaced. |

Sadly the words 'album tracks' are not in the dictionary of those who choose the music for daytime Radio 2. For example last week Richard 'desperately dull' Allinson ran a slot featuring three songs from classic albums. One feature was on The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. What three songs did the dullard play? Yes you've guessed: Wouldn't It Be Nice, Sloop John B and God Only Knows. Great songs, but couldn't they have played Caroline No or You Still Believe In Me? Silly question.
Similarly Johnnie Walker on SOT70s a few months ago featured the great Band On The Run album, and played the title track and Jet! What a wasted opportunity to play other songs from that fine album. What a goof. |

In total contrast, Radio Caroline - which has been Britain's first and only album station since the 1970s - not only specialises in album tracks but also brings little-heard album versions of songs too. Today I was interested to hear Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild". Nothing strange about that you might think - this would be the one and only choice of yer average Radio 2 producer who might well have been reared on Kylie and Jason records - but this was a version I've never heard before!
Quite why people tolerate the safe and uninspiring programming on Radio 2 is beyond me, because for most of the time it's just rubbish! |

Yes, I can't quite imagine Ken Bruce playing The Pusher or Magic Carpet Ride!
Will have to give Caroline a listen. |

Right know, literally as I type, they're playing a track by the Doors. Radio 2 would only offer up "Riders On A Storm" - but this is a track I haven't heard for years and years - "Love Me Two Times" (from their second album in 1969).
See what I mean?
I've just realised something: I haven't listened to Radio 2 live (I've caught up with a couple of things on iPlayer) since before Christmas! |

Schizoidman, Steppenwolf's The Pusher has also been used as backing music for Jo Good's 'Easy Riser' slot on 6 Music!
Did you also see someone singing Tower Of Strength on the karaoke on 'Benidorm'? It was the episode where Roy Wood guested. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Pick Of The Pops has become a programme of looking back at charts retrospectivly but(and I could be wrong)but wasn't it originally just the name given to the weekly programme that featured that week's Top 20 on a Sunday around 6pm?
And really as the charts changed little you could do a two hour programme mixing all music from all the charts and if you must give out statistics all you need to know is the year, the highest position it reached and how many weeks it was in the chart.
Interested in any views and possibly if you can verify if I am wrong with my memory of the original programme. |

Absolutely Correct
When Alan Freeman originally presented the show in the sixties he used to play the records in the current chart but I have a feeling that the show was divided into different sections and not all the music was in the current chart
I seem to recall there was a section for new releases and the final segment was the chart rundown but obviously only the top few records not the top forty like with current chart shows
I think Fluff went over to doing a rock show on Saturday afternoons in the early 70s and POTP stopped as I recall listening when I was at University in Leicester
After that Fluff left the BBC and eventually the show reappeared on Radio 2 in something like its present format with charts from earlier years being covered each week
I think Fluff might have presented this for a short time before Dale Winton took over around 2000
There was also a spell when Jimmy Saville presented his Old Music Club show on Radio 1 but whilst this might have been intended to cover roughly what POTP covers it was not quite the same format but fairly similar
Sorry if any of the above is not spot on but I am writing from memory and others may be able to fill in some gaps
I'm thinking the original POTP had four sections
Am I right? _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Thanks Ruddlescat,
That sounds pretty close to how I thought it used to be...
As you say Fluff did a rock show for some time(I think that started on Capital(?)before he returned to the BBC...
It would be difficult to do a chart show these days and call it official(though I think they still try to call it that)by including downloads and other ways of getting music.
Also there was a time when commercial radio had their own charts which weredifferent to the one classed as official as used on the BBC.
Again, I'm sure that another song played today was not the original(Donna Summer - Love To Love You Baby)Unless it was a remix? |

You're right about Alan Freeman doing Pick Of The Pops on Radio 2. Dale took it over when Alan's failing health finally precluded his doing POTP any more, or his classical music show Their Greatest Bits which was around the same period and I think was on tuesday evenings. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Many thanks for that Andy
It would seem from reading it that my recollections were pretty accurate but of course I couldn't fill in the gap between 1972 and 1997 because in those days I could not receive Capital being out of their area so I didn't realise the show had a continuing life before it came over to Radio 2 in 1997
In my view it should be moved back to its original slot of 5pm on Sunday _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Ruddles: I seem to remember that POTP in the mid and late 60s/early 70s was divided into four sections (it must have been a two hour show).
Part One was new entries, then climbers, then an album track, then of course the Top Ten, or most of the Twenty--something like that anyway.
Years ago I was sorting out my late father's things and found a reel to reel tape on his Grundig tape recorder. I played it and to my delight it was a POTP from summer 1969. The album track was the brilliant In The Presence Of The Lord by Blind Faith. No 1 was Something In The Air by Thunderclap Newman. Sadly I lost the tape.
Yes, I'd like the show today on a Sunday afternoon/evening. |

You're talking July 1969 there Schiz
The reason I know is that I actually went to see a gig by Thunderclap Newman in North Devon and at that time they were number one in the charts
A great night as I recall even though I was only 14 at the time
They must have had strong Coke in those days _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |
