James Moir, BBC Head of Light Entertainment from 1987-1993 and former Controller of BBC Radio 2, presents a tribute to David Jacobs CBE, who this year celebrates 67 years at the microphone.

This programme features new interviews and tributes from Michael Bowen, Field Marshall Lord Bramall, Ken Bruce, Desmond Carrington, Charles Chilton, Michael Crawford, Dame Judi Dench, Chris Evans, Sir Peter Hall, Ken Livingstone, Dame Vera Lynn, Brian Matthew, Pete Murray, Lord Rix, Carole Stone, Ann Widdecombe and Michael Winner.

That is good news Gildy. I think Russell Davies mentioned it recently and I also think that RD has researched and written it (not quite sure about that.)

I always listen to DJ on Sunday nights and remember when I was a teenager in the 1950s going to the Radio Show at Olympia and queueing up for ages to get his autograph.

I'd been an avid listener to Journey Into Space in which he played all the characters who weren't the four leads and on the strength of that I listened every Saturday lunchtime to Cyril Stapleton's Show Band Show in which DJ was the announcer (just to hear his voice).

That's a lovely story Eileen,

He seems to have been there all of my radio listening and he always had a lovely speaking voice but so many of who we call great broadcasters did and in their later years many still do, whether being actors as well as(in many cases)singers, might have something to do with it.

They were clear and spoke well but not necessarily "Posh"

Desmon Carrington, Teddy Johnson, Pete Murray and others...

If Russell Davies has researched the programme, it should be good.

What a fine broadcaster DJ is. And what a voice! Cool

But it seems odd to celebrate 67 years at the mic- why not his 65th anniversary or hold on 'til his 70th?
But I've probably missed some blindingly obvious point Very Happy

Its more than possible but I do hope that they still give us a similar programme and do not use it as an excuse to drop another programme of that kind of music...

If they cannot give us an hour of 50's music and/or another presenter doing what he does...I'd like Russell Davies programme extended.

Another couple of fine broadcasters(wish I'd paid more attention when they were on air)but I was very young Laughing

I play DJ's shows and others for Mum at different times to when they are broadcast and we always join in with DJ when he says ""Hello There!" Laughing

I hadn't really noticed it, but I've always said "Hello there" as a greeting to people other than friends and family.

It was a lovely occasion with a great good-humoured atmosphere. The terrific band was led ebulliently by Joe Pettit who took over the leadership from Len Phillips a couple of years ago.

The excellent singers were Eleanor Keenan and Gary Williams. And dear David Jacobs sat at the side of the stage throughout. He introduced many of the numbers, told some stories and interacted easily and jokily with Joe, Gary and Eleanor.

A memorable afternoon!

I was listening to Radio4Extra late last night. It was an episode of Journey Into Space with DJ playing Frank Rogers. He used to play all the other secondary characters too which was when I first became a fan of his as a teenager.

After that he used to introduce the Saturday lunchtime programme Cyril Stapleton's Show Band Show and I used to listen to that not only for the music but also for DJ's mellifluous tones.

I've still got his autograph from those days when I queued up to see him at the Radio Show at Olympia in London. Unfortunately at Eastbourne he didn't come out during the interval - I expect he needed a break!
