|
|
Ever since Bob Shennan became Controller of Radio 2, there has been a decline in black and Asian presenters and programming. We've seen the axing of Mo Dutta, Norman Jay, and Jason and Ayare. There has also been a decline in black music being played on Radio 2, notably rap and reggae. Mark Lamarr often played reggae.
On Christmas Night 2010, I heard Levi Roots' Lovers Rock Special on Radio 2 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd love to hear Levi Roots host a reggae show on Radio 2. Likewise, I'd like to hear Norman Jay and Jason and Iyare back on the network.
Whatever happened to Tim Westwood's series on rap music and Trevor McDonald's series on calypso music we were promised a few years ago? They never materialised.
Mo Dutta was not to everyone's taste, but he'd been on Radio 2 since 1994 and I think the way Shennan ousted him was disgraceful. What a way to treat someone who'd worked at Radio 2 some fifteen years. |

It's quality presenters who are needed irrespective of their ethnic origins
You don't have to be black or Asian to present promote or appreciate decent qualiy reggae music or the like
I do agree about Mo Dutta though - he was treated very badly _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I guess your meaning someone who presents full time. There is a lack of them on Radio 2. Commercial Radio do have a fair few. |

Nikki Bedi and Craig Charles aren't full-time presenters on Radio 2. Nor do they host specialist programming showcasing black music. The other three you mention are news and travel readers.
You're the one who needs to check their facts. |

Radio 2 was criticised a few years ago for cutting out rap lyrics in songs. It's as if the network has a phobia with rap music. |

You said "Ever since Bob Shennan became Controller of Radio 2, there has been a decline in black and Asian presenters and programming" but the fact these two have been appearing more often shows your statement to be untrue.

Radio 2 is a speech and music station. It's not all about DJs. |

Even better - that means they're not limited to "specialist" music programmes or out of the way of the mainstream shows! Moira Stuart of course is newsreader during the Breakfast Show - and plays a role larger than just "reading the news".
Likewise, Rebecca Pike - doesn't she do something like the business news on Drivetime? (I have to admit I don't often have the radio on at that time of day).
So that's two key people who are heard on peak time Radio 2 who are either black/Asian; and remembering of course that Moira Stuart only started on Radio 2 last year (AFTER Bob Shennan joined Radio 2), I'd say it increased!
Not that it matters of course - I don't think its right that someone should be given a job just because an employer (BBC or otherwise) has to recruit a certain number of people from within a certain ethnic group, or for gender equality reasons etc. If someone does the job well enough, they should get it. If they can't, they shouldn't. _________________ Fred Hart

Have been out of the country for a number of days-no sooner than I log in to this site re catching up, than I immediately detect that we have a new prolific poster on this board.
Strangely/perhaps by coincidence, the various postings remind me of someone else from the recent past who use to post his various messages in a very similar way/style. |

It would help to reduce disruption on the forum if folks didn't go on and on about someone after he's been banned _________________ -

Reminds me of the reply George Harrison gave many years ago when asked of his opinion of rap music - Have they missed a letter off the front ? _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

And dealt with two weeks ago.
Why do posters continue to let the forum be disrupted after pesky person is long gone? _________________ -
