Don't think anyone has mentioned this series as yet. I missed the first one which featured Lieber and Stoller, but the 2nd episode featuring Goffin and King is still on iPlayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01c9f4z and IMHO is a good listen.
You'll know the songs and perhaps the stories already but they play the whole track which for me makes it a good listen.
Next one is Jagger and Richards so I'm guessing a bit different. Tuesday night at 10 pm.

Enjoyed this,Helen.....chit chat an' all.....they composed some brilliant songs ...some of them all time favourites of mine
I listened to a play about the life of Billy Fury recently and later on in his career he came to hate singing his Goffin and King hit Halfway to Paradise whereas I never tire of hearing it |

I never knew Goffin and King wrote that, Becky. You learn something everyday.
I missed the Lieber and Stoller as well, just like Helen. But enjoyed the second one, while the Jagger/Richards one, though I knew the stories, I heard some really interesting covers. Especially Etta James' version of Miss You. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Didn't rate David Bowie's version of Let's Spend The Night Together at all but would single out, like you Raver, the version of Miss You by Etta James which was terrific.
I never got used to the idea of Cliff Richard singing a Jagger/ Richards song ...it's just not right somehow
I've always liked this little ditty the duo penned

That's a nice little song Becky, very 1964.
The musical director was John Paul Jones, presumably of later Led Zep fame. |

It was on the record that was on the YT clip, Becky...
I'd never heard it before.

I'd pay good money to hear His Cliffness sing Sympathy For The Devil .
I don't much care for the Bowie cover either, but did like the Britnay Satisfaction,at least until it went all X Factor after a minute or so.
How about these , for original and cover..? Mr Pitney sure elevated this litle ditty...

I've never heard that version by the Stones before,Raver.... it's dire .. .. whereas the lovely Gene's version is a winner
The third picture of Mick Jagger, on their version of the song, holding the cigarette is so camp ..it made me |

Caught up with this show this morning. I always loved As Tears Go By, memories of singing to a hairbrush along with Marianne Faithful

Becky: they wrote many of the Philadelphia Sound songs from the early 70s: Back Stabbers and Love Train by The O'Jays, Me And Mrs Jones by Billy Paul, and If You Don't Know Me By Now by Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes, and others. Will be worth hearing the show. |

I'd heard the names but couldn't put any song titles to them. Should be good!
Enjoyed this week's songs from Les Mason and Alan Reed.

H | Yes, listening to how they wrote their songs, with a cuppa handy, you would have thought they came before the likes of Jagger and Richards wouldn't you? |

Another good prog. Les and Barry had a good thing going on Sunday mornings, didn't they.
I always thought Gamble and Huff sounded like a company that produced washing powder. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

A very innocent looking, young and beautiful Marianne Faithful was one of the interviewees on this programme last night
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01dy7pr
it's full of titbits from interviews... 1950s to the 1970s...on the BBC ..... well worth a look if it has passed anyone by...
Michael says on the latest programme about the Cook/Greenaway song Softly Whispering I Love You that it is a bit mad but I LOVE it...always have...
This programme continues to be,with Michael at the helm, a very entertaining hour's listening each week..he is a very genial host.

Soul Music this week, on Radio 4, focuses on Don't Leave Me This Way composed by Huff, Gamble and Gilbert.
Remarkable stories in this edition of Soul Music reflect the pain expressed in this soul classic, including one told by Dr Dan Gottlieb, a quadriplegic therapist who befriended Teddy Pendergrass after he became paralysed in a car accident.
Worth a listen for Teddy's story alone.

Have just watched Luther and at the end of it they played another Huff and Gamble song, Never Gonna Give You Up, sung by the Black Keys, originally by Jerry Butler....no getting away from them at the moment! |
