|
|
Final broadcast from Bush House goes out today at, 1 o'clock (12 pm GMT).
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-18801251
I don't listen to it but I remember 20 years ago finding it on the back of a satellite feed in a hotel room in San Francisco. It was the week of the ousting of Gorbachov and the news in the US was quite alaming to watch. At that time I don't think we had quite reached the saturation point of panic of 24 news over here as we now know it today. So at 10 o'clock at night while packing cases for our return it was somewhat comforting to hear the 6am news coming out of London stating the facts with no hype. I felt the world hadn't quite gone mad.
No doubt many others have found the same over the years.

Correction it was in fact at 12 midday local time. _________________ 88 - 91 FM this is Radio 2 from the BBC!

You're not alone, Helen. There's something quintessentially British about the World Service, and very comforting to hear when you're in some far-flung location.
Of course, the service itself isn't closing - only its operation from Bush House. |

I know it's not the end of the World Service but I wonder if the atmosphere will be the same? It's a sad end of one of the jewels of the BBC.

Very true. Unfortunately, it occurs in a climate in which our leaders need to know the price of everything yet know the value of absolutely of nothing. The day the government announced that the BBC World Service should be funded from the Licence Fee revenues and not by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office was the day that the World Service was pushed on its way down the slippery slope. |

By the way Colin I came across this a few weeks ago and thought of you, I think it was before you came back on the board though.

Helen!!! Thank you for finding this.......
My digital video transfer studio is full of ex-BBC stuff but sometimes an auction slips by without my noticing, and this is one of them. I would really like to buy the lot, but I'm on the lookout for one or more Studer ATRs (audio tape recorders). Trouble is, such an auction will attract a lot of specialist buyers so competition will be stiff.

Thought you would be interested! So much of it is boxed & unused!
There were a couple of things that interested me but I've never bid online (apart from Ebay). I'm assuming that you'll have to buy the complete 'lot' which of course would be no good.

PS I think it was a tweet by Martha Kearney that alerted me! _________________ 88 - 91 FM this is Radio 2 from the BBC!

Helen - no, you don't have to bid on whole lots. Registered users can click on batch icons which then reveal a complete list of items in that category against which you can enter your bid. It displays the highest bid on each item.
I'm think I might get down and have a look for myself as soon as we're allowed to. It will be sad atmosphere, though; I used to spend time at the BBC's Open University Production Centre in Milton Keynes in its day, and when it was closed I picked up a lot of equipment - including radio mics, a Revox tape machine, a video timebase corrector (best not ask - but it's in use during the transfer of 300 VHS cassettes right now!) and other stuff like patchbays, racks, etc. It's sad to see a once-vibrant production centre being ripped apart and in a soul-less state, but that's what they call progress.
And of course it's mostly analogue - which is what I actually need! |

Thanks Colin. I'll have another look, it's a few weeks since I found it.
There's a lot to be said for analogue stuff!

My own business is what you might call "niche" - and one that needs analogue technology in order to preserve analogue media in a digital form. Trouble is that when it goes wrong it's almost impossible to get it serviced or repaired economically because those with the skills to do it are now in short supply (and that's especially true of today's BBC, by the way). |

Colin have you seen lot 621? There is another one with a lower number as well.
