Just a reminder that John Wilson Orchestra's prom The Broadway Sound will be televised this Saturday on BBC2 at 7.30.
It live was on R3 Monday night and is still on the iPlayer. I recorded it and heard the last 10 minutes and it sounds like it should be good.

Well I think it was fantastic. It's hard to pick out any favourite numbers but I specially enjoyed "Little Tin Box" and "Tap Your Troubles Away" (which I'm sure would have pleased David Jacobs )
I always get a little nervous when anyone is going to attempt "Ya Got Trouble" but I thought Seth McF did a great job (as did Brian Conley at Chichester a couple of years ago) but Robert Preston is really the tops for that song.
Isn't it lovely how John Wilson shows that he simply loves all that music? He and his great orchestra seem to have become a yearly fixture at the Proms. Long may that continue .
PS: Yes, Helen, "Mame" too!

I enjoyed it very much too! My favourites were Tap Your Troubles Away, and Mame.
I wonder what he'll do for the next one? As you say his prom is part of the fixtures now.

It says much for John Wilson's talents that we're off to see him twice at the Gateshead Sage in the next few weeks. One is a light music concert (Eric Coates, Haydn Wood and the like) and the other is a more standard symphonic one, though Eric Coates gets a look-in at this one, too. All this and Mr W's aptitude for conducting musicals, too.

What a lovely couple of hours that was .....music can make you feel so light and happy ....although in the case of Younger Than Springtime it always brings tears to my eyes but only because, to my ears, it is a perfect song that really moves me.....Julian did a creditable version but no one touches John Kerr's version for me ....
I read this about John Kerr a while a go on Wiki
Around 1966-67, Kerr took an interest in film directing, and worked as an apprentice with Leo Penn, who was then directing episodes of the Ben Gazzara television series Run for Your Life — but Kerr was quickly disenchanted by the mundane aspects of the work, and applied to and was accepted at UCLA Law School.
He graduated law school, and passed the California bar in 1970. He since pursued a full-time career as a Beverly Hill's lawyer but still accepted occasional small roles in a variety of television productions over the years.
I'm not that familiar with the music from Slaughter on Tenth Avenue ( it's beautiful) so it is always a pleasant surprise when I hear it unexpectedly.
( Hope you enjoy the concerts,Ian) |

Is one of them part of his autumn tour featuring Rodgers and Hammerstein and Rodgers and Hart Ian? We've booked for that at the Bridgewater Hall at the beginning of November.

No, I don't think so. He's coming to the Sage on 25 October with that one. Sadly, we can't make it.

Just a shout out for anyone who has Sky HD.
Tonight on the BBC HD channel (169 on SKY) at 7pm, Michael Parkinson introduces A Swinging Christmas with the John Wilson orchestra. It doesn't say that it's a repeat but it sounds a bit familiar to me.
Anyway enjoy it if you can get that channel. We've just gone HD as the sky+ box packed up last weekend so a new channel to us.
