Road Tax and better pricing of fuel are plans being put forward to help the road user.

Have we got room for road tolls? Our roads are busy at most of the time with extra hold ups. ( Dartford Tunnel is one of them ). M6 Toll is too pricey and people don't use it.

Does the Government control the roads if it went to pay as you drive, or would it go out to tender for private firms to run? |

To help the road user? To add another revenue stream for the Exchequer, you mean.

That's funny, because the last time I used the M6 Toll there were lots of vehicles on it. |

It's another way to monitor speeding too. I don't like the idea as it will cost more to implement. |

Mark, people DO use the Toll road. Have YOU ever been on it?
I've used it several times this summer getting from Cov to Manchester Airport in the morning. It's worth a fiver just to breeze through the West Midlands at 9.00am.
I have to say though that not enough drivers use it. If I'm going to Brum then the toll road is not a sensible route, you have top stay on the M6and exit at 5 or 6, or further for black country. And at those exits it's clear a lot of folk are heading north and adding 45 mins to everyone's sloooowww journey! _________________ -

Yes I have been on the toll road. I do drive for a living. It's a costly way to run roads when we already pay through the noise for fuel, Insurance, and road tax. I believe we already pay 12p tax a mile on fuel. There are lots of advantages for taking away road tax, but there are lots of disadvantages which one will be costly and lots of arguments. It's a way for the Government to try and move people off the roads onto public transport, but that isn't improved much.. |

So how do you conclude that "people don't use it" when they clearly do?
I think that RFL should be abolished, and the taxation should be shifted onto fuel use. That way, the motorist pays according to usage of the public road system. |
